atarashii york

woohoo! so new york has been a ton of fun! i survived my first east coast show. actually it was incredibly fun and i so enjoyed meeting everyone there :) i can’t wait to be back!

notable things so far:
- smoked salmon sliced fresh from the grocery store is SO much better than the prepackaged kind. bagels and lox… AHH. yum.
- subways are fun! so very very sad that efficient public transportation doesn’t exist in LA.
- cake batter italian ice! mmm.
- so many buildings.
- also, so many dachshunds! yay

street team update:
i’m still processing everyone’s forms! we’ll kick into action early june :)

also– tervoo interview is up!

http://www.tervoo.com/results.php?i=25

i’ve been graduated for a year!! ah! where has the time gone?!

oovrets questions:
Which do you prefer:
subways or freeways?
subways (i falls asleep on freeways. it’s possible i could fall asleep on a subway too… but at least that wont kill me)
Manhattan or Manhattan Beach?
hmmmmmmmmm. both
65°(rain) or 95°(sunny)?
probably sunny, but 95 is HOT. i do enjoy the rain when i’m not needing to get somewhere. it’s fun to play in/ look at from inside a warm house wrapped up in a blanket reading a book by the fire and drinking hot chocolate.
Statue of Liberty or statue of Flo-Jo?
either
Knicks or Lakers?
ha… i’m assuming knicks have something to do with new york? yup. sports…

el rey this weekend! yayyyy!

@hydro
i’m so sorry we couldn’t make it to your show on sunday! i am so so glad i finally got to meet you though!
@addie

I wish. I live in Tennessee, so the drive’s a little far. There’s a teeny tiny chance I’ll make it out there on Labor Day, when my Vols will stomp UCLA into an ugly pulp. But that’s clearly not this weekend :)

And I hart you too emceemiko!

And yay for cello love :) Would you believe “Paid for in Dollar Coins” brought me my cello from accross the country (he flew with it, and so had to travel on public transportation with that and all of his other luggage to get home from the airport to suprise me)!

Hey Kina,
GREAT Cover. That song has been one of my dark horse favorites over the past few years and I haven’t heard anyone cover it before now. Great job, I would love to hear how it sounds without the Ferrets. ;-)
I’m glad the show in NYC went well, good luck @ the El Ray this weekend.
And, thanks for the interview heads up.
… hmm, “Noble Honesty” … from what I know of you by now, I would say that fits well.

middle name: david
scariest thing: saw 4 ghosts UP CLOSE in 2 incidents when i was 9
fear: regretting things down the line
makes me happiest: good food, good sleep, good music, good people, good thrills, good movies, good books. all around goodness hahaha

heh, i never smoked it myself, i get spoiled by my family from up north. i haven’t had moose, my family is only in the SE islands, so outside of reindeer sausage, i get mostly seafood. I love being up there, even though it was the hardest job i ever had, commercial salmon fishing still was the most rewarding, seeing humpbacks breech in person is way cooler than seeing it on TV or whatever

i’m glad you enjoyed new york, kina! yeah, aren’t subways wonderful? it’s so easy to just hop-on from home and hop-off at wherever. as a former californian now-turned an “east coaster person” i share your sentiments =)

it was wonderful seeing you in person. i think you sound so much better live (videos/audios don’t do justice!) and you’re just as funny and sweet as you are on your blog videos. i hope you come back soon!! ^^v

May 19, 2008

btw, whenever someone mentions the cello, i think of this:

Dewey Finn: Katie, what was that thing you were playing today, the big thing?
Katie: Cello.
Dewey Finn: Ok. This is a bass guitar. And it’s the exact same thing but instead of playing it like this you tip it on the side… cello, you got a bass.

Kina you rock! Someday you’ll have to make a Florida tour so I’m not thwarted by a 24 hour drive to come see your show!

I’m thinking you should find an antihistamine that won’t interfere with life.

I have a song request, no pressure, I won’t hate you if you don’t, I know you are busy… etc.

James Taylor – Sweet Baby James

I think your voice and style could blow the original away.

*HUGS* to you and Emi and Misa.

Aeglos said on...

i’ faith lady, ’tis a fair song, and a fair singer, and yet, I must confess, ’tis powerful queer to hear sung so differently a song so familar that it must needs evoke the original hearing with every note.

ferrets? I guess Misa didn’t grow up on the Redwall books :)

I have a few jars of GREAT smoked salmon sitting at home… a family friend lives in Alaska, and catches/smokes/cans it herself. She packs it with oil and something sweet like molasses.

Oh– so good. Rich like smoked oysters, but great salmon flavor.

May 19, 2008

Wow, I never would’ve thought Let Go could sound so good acoustically. Also, thanks to you, I can now confirm the lyrics. I always thought Frou Frou/Imogen Heap just muffled up the words with her accent. And when you think about it, some of the words really make no sense. But the song is still so fun!

Anyways, I’ll see you all at the El Rey come this Saturday :).

Kendra said on...

May 19, 2008

I was wondering why I’d never noticed how much I love this song… and then I realized it was because 70% of the reason it was so incredible just now was because you sang it (ferrets or no ferrets).

I am so ridiculously bummed I wasn’t able to see you in NY this weekend. Gosh darn having to an adult and study for board exams. Please make it a habit of getting off the West coast every once and a while — perhaps Boston next??? (If you think NY has good transportation, you haven’t seen efficient.)

I loved those books for a long time, but as I got older and I read more of them there was this creeping sense of deja vu in each “new” book, which, when I finally faced it, turned out to be the simple fact that they’re all kinda the same book with the same characters :)

but oh, Skarlath, there was never one like you

Beautifully sung! And yet another rare cover that I didn’t think could be made more lovely than the origninal. When you aren’t doing what I think would be an untouchable cover, you’re taking a song i dismissed and making it memorable… so my question this week, Kina, how do you chose them so well?

…which leads me to this: catching up on previous blahg comments – there was a radio station idea floating around that made me think of a local daily feature (105.1 the Buzz in Portland) called ‘Celebrity Playlist.’ It started with an ‘everyone’s a celebrity’ theme, but has grown to include local celebrities and a few you might not know (yet!) but who have a great playlist and story to tell.

It’s an Entercom station so you know cities across the nation are doing features like this. It could fit nicely on that tour of all our other wonderful cities. Or we could just pick a station a week and request your songs too. Then they’d be begging you to call in. Here’s a link to some podcasts http://1051thebuzz.com/pages/1296889.php?

I like to think I am the Unofficial Weekly Kina Interview. To ask the questions that wouldn’t make it very far on tervoo.

As a service to the bla(h)g community I try to ask questions that many would not have on their minds, yet can produce an answer that is interesting to hear.

The first week of questions went much better than expected. So of course I posted again. The thought that my question about the most played song on her iPod could have led to this weeks cover, or that it exposed how much she practiced for this cover amazes me. That was never the intent of the question, yet this is where it has brought us.

Kina has been a great sport and an even better interview. I will continue to post until I run out of questions or Kina runs out of answers.

But really, don’t take me too seriously, I don’t.

Loved your cover… whenever I think of frou frou, I think of those fuzzy things that dancers usually have at the edge of clothes… my ballroom dancing sister-in-law has mentioned that before. @ kina
I never knew a song like that could be turned into such a great acoustic song. It should be turned into an mp3 to be sold and I would buy it.

@ miko
Hey miko I know how you always seem to be rapping or freestyling in your car, have you ever gotten so into a rap that you almost crashed?

LUCKY!!! I love Marie too! Put in a good word from the KG fans lol

Hey, Marie’s really cool too. I saw her at the Hotel Cafe back in December.

Two months later, I watched Kina play there for the first time.

I must be partial to half-japanese female musicians who like to play at the Hotel Cafe.

I think if they ever played there together, the building would explode from having too much awesomeness in it.

its so awesome to witness the chicago bulls progression back to the glory days of the 90’s. Even without this #1 overall pick, they have such an influx of talent so much so that it’s ridiculous. once they put it together, they definitely will have a shot at the title. its also plausible that by the time this offseason is over and the new season dawns upon us, that they will be crowned the team to beat in the east. but then again miko…..

its it in my view that the bulls buzz will quickly be extinguished when the orlando magic make the following move:

a trade involving hedo turkaglu+1st rounder for the draft rights to OJ Mayo. This of course impying that lewis will move back to SF and the magic acquiring udonis haslem from the heat. Mayo and Howard would build a dynasty.

whether these deals come to fruition are anybody’s guess but you heard it here first. i believe the magic will be the best team in the league for years to come.

@Kina
Not to be a hog with the birthday shout-outs, but my wife’s b-day is coming up Tuesday, and we’ll be at the show Sat. at the El Rey…. If you have “Together” on your set list, would you mind giving a birthday wish to “Miss Meghan” when you sing it?

Might help her forgive the whole chocolate-fiasco…. ;-)

@MamaG
If you’re going to be hawking shirts at the show, could you hold a XXL (or maybe XL) black “Logo” shirt for me? *(reaches behind back)*…. I have musuBIII. ;-)

Thanks,
-wwar1ace

Mama G said on...

May 23, 2008

Unfortunately, there are no more XXL shirts (should have printed more!). But an order should be going in soon so I’ll hold one for you when they’re done….. I would have done it… even without the little incentive!

wwar1ace said on...

May 23, 2008

No problem. If you have XL there, I’ll check it out… but I hear they run a bit small.

See you there. Hopefully they don’t frisk me for spam at the door.

Kina!?!?!?

Can’t wait for your show at the el Rey tonight! Got my tickets online already, but noticed on the El Rey website that they don’t allow guests to bring pro camera equipment. I know from previous gigs there with other bands they do allow pro photographers if they were cleared first with the venue by the artist.

Is it possible for you to talk to the El Rey people and clear me to photograph your performance tomorrow? I’ll try to contact them also early tomorrow afternoon…

Thanks! …and see you there!

I come here from Yael Naim’s YouTube site.
I found another Upload, It was you, I saw you singing there, I heard New Soul of Yael Naim’s cover

This article’s “atarashii” means “New”, that is Japanese.
So, I wrote this comment.

Sorry, my website is all Japanese character of 2 Byte.

May 24, 2008

hi i just came back from kina’s show…

it was decent.

JK… haha

no but for real… EVERYONE you ALL MISSED OUT IF YOU DIDN’T MAKE THIS SHOW…

KINA IS AN AMAZING LIVE PERFORMER… OMG… SO GOOOOOOOOOOD

id write about it but im a little sleepy lol

but let me write what i can
the set was too short. like an hour too short
kina carried the crowd between songs with her charming and lovely personality and was so gracious and so delightful to watch and listen to
kina singing her songs live made me literally watery eyed… during “together”
half the time, i did NOT even look up at kina cuz i had my eyes closed just lost in her music… together hit home for some reason… i dunno why … lol. that’s the best when you just lose yourself and not care how foolish you look like… i love music… it sets me free from the stress and worries of the world, and tonight kina’s music was like the emancipation proclamation hahahaha. whoa i never used that before
kina singing live is a gift from God =)

i met mama g, dr g, and emi.

all wonderful and lovely people and so nice and loving and warm.

tonight show was like heaven… it was like paradise… gangsta’s paradise hehe

Week 4:
First show in NY, first show at El Rey Theatre, first show for Miko…

What was the first album you purchased?
At what venue did you first publicly perform one of your songs?
What was the first song(cover) you learned to play on the guitar?
What was your first job?
To whom did you give your first fan autograph?

Mama G said on...

May 25, 2008

Nimur, you were at the El Rey? Next time stop by and introduce yourself! Brian, thank you for the musubi! Ono!

I really enjoyed seeing everyone at the show last night. It seemed too short to me as well, but I loved it nonetheless. I am sorry that I didn’t get to say hello to Timmy and Nimur, but was glad to finally meet Miko (congratulations again!!! and your father seems to be a very nice fellow too), and see wwar1ace and ernie again.

I hope the show this Friday at UC Riverside goes as well, and the lucky audience there will get to hear not only Kina, but Miko too.

@emi – welcome to Kina’s blog. She was in Japan with her other sisters a little over a year ago and had a wonderful time. Her younger sister is named Emi too. l really like that name ;)

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

For everyone who couldn’t make it out to the El Rey last night, here’a a few pics from her performance:

Soulful Kina…

Kina and Emi duet…

Don’t know what Kina was doing here…

Since I couldn’t cough up the $1500 photography fee that the El Rey charges for shooting in their venue, I decided to borrow a friends small point and shoot camera for the night. That is the official story… ;-)

and as always, good to see the Grannis Family last night, good to see all the fellow bloggers and photographers, and another great performance by Kina!?!?!

Is Kina’s show on friday at Riverside private? When I looked at her myspace it seemed like some top secret house where only VIP Kina members could get in. That suck’s its on Friday, I am still in school, unless I ditch, I don’t think Kina would approve of that though. When I go to a Kina show I am going to rock my new Piet Mondrian’s.
Also, has anyone tried going to kinagrannis.com and got some error message that said something like the bandwith for this server has been exceeded or something

Edit: How did Kina change so fast in the Take a Bow video, the video was seamless and I am still mystified sitting at my computer wondering.

emceemiko said on...

May 25, 2008

i think DR G meant thursday. the riverside show is on thursday, may 29th.

unless he was referring to the 30th lol

well i am not performing on the 30th, so yeah i think he meant the 29th haha

Dr G said on...

May 25, 2008

Yes, I meant Thursday, May 29th. Sorry for the confusion.

blew said on...

May 25, 2008
