Blog

i am alive again.

wow! yesterday was a tired tired day. but i survived and am alive to talk about it today so this is good!

the reason i was so dead yesterday is that i had my first marathon training practice! about a week ago i decided to register for a marathon this october with Team in Training, a branch of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. i am a big supporter of blood cancer research, so to be running in honor of the LLS is very meaningful to me. i am incredibly excited to take this on.

this also means that i might make a habit of posting a bit later on mondays since my long runs will always be on sundays. right now that doesn’t mean much… but in a few months that will mean a few hours of running… AH! so i’ll need to recuperate on sundays and record blogs early monday.

the el rey was SO FUN! oh my goodness… this was my first time having a curtain open on me and wow was that crazy to be staring at a wall of red and suddenly see hundreds of faces smiling up at you. i wanted to hug every one of them. i played “message” at the end of the set and everyone started singing along… i almost died of happiness. i have dreamt of that moment. thank you all for making it real :)

oh plus i met emceemiko at the show!! twas quite a treat. i even saw him in the crowd dancing all cool-style to my songs like only a true emcee would :)

oovrets questions of the week:
What was the first album you purchased? ace of base
At what venue did you first publicly perform one of your songs? AP Calculus, CAPO valley high school, 2002
What was the first song (cover) you learned to play on the guitar? I don’t even know what the song is called, but it was that song that goes “hello world, this is me, life should be fun for everyone”
What was your first job? barista at diedrich coffee!
To whom did you give your first fan autograph? oh hmm. i don’t remember. i’m not sure when people asking for my autograph went from feeling like a silly joke people were playing on me to a legitimate request… haha

Kina!

I loved the show at the El Rey, especially the acoustic rendition of “Gangsta’s Paradise”.

Thanks for signing my shirt, and I can’t wait to see your next show!

Ah, Kina, the only thing better than John Mayer and Kina is Kina singing John Mayer. Two thumbs up.

And I totally got the chills reading about you running for LLS. I’ve heard about Team in Training, and I know it’s a huge commitment. With all you do, I’m sure it makes it very hard to take on. I work for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, so cancer research is something that is so incredibly important to me and everyone I encounter in my daily life. You rock!

Ya know, that’s the only John Mayer song I don’t like, but I liked this version. Kina, you take a song I hate and transform it into one I can tolerate when Amanda plays it over and over again for a week. Kudos ^.^

Kina you are a true musician, guitar player, uke master, piano player. I am happy we got to see the old Taylor I was beginning to think you forgot about it. Great song, I liked the twist you put on it. I wish you had more shows on the weekends so us poor highschool students can go to your shows instead of daydreaming about them during class hours.

That’s awesome that you’re participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society marathon :). I think it’s really selfless of you to take the time out of your crazy/busy schedule to be involved in the quest to find a cure for cancer.

Make sure you drink plenty of water! ;)

Hope you and your family are enjoying a great Memorial Day! mmm bbq…

p.s. I’m sorry to hear that about your uncle Austin.

i’m so glad you’re doing this for LLS. a little girl that’s almost like a little sister to me recently was diagnosed with leukemia, but thankfully, she’s recovered really well and is like a miracle child. we just all hope it stays like this.

and THANK YOU so much for the bday shout out! that really rocked my world just now haha.

Great cover once again, and I love it when you back yourself up. I do that in most of my videos too. Speaking of which, quick Q, did that DVD work? I did a video for my friend’s graduation and that didn’t even play, and it was at a giant event (quite embarrassing), so I’m just wondering.

@Kina
Was great to get to see you play a bigger place like The El Rey… the crowd around the bar at the back was a noisy nuisance, but you dealt with it admirably. The one thing I would mention is to watch out for the sound in venues like that…. the guy running the sound board had the bass cranked up so high on your guitar feed, it was drowning out a lot of your vocals and other guitar. Not your fault though, judging from the second act, that’s how they’re set to run there.

Thanks for the b-day shoutouts…. my wife’s reaction was hilarious, “Miss MEGHAN?!??? *(looks this way, looks that way)*… Hey, that’s ME!!!”. There’s more to that story, but don’t think I should post it to stay on her good side.

@Emi
Was nice to finally get to see you at one of these things… and on STAGE, no less! Good work, now my wife wants a salt-shaker with some peppercorns in it to shake along with…

@Dr. G
Nice to see you again… this time you had the table.

@MamaG
Ono…eh?

;-)

Oh, and thanks for the shirt.

love the way you did this song. i have to say, you may have felt dead, but today you seem veryyyyy alive. even more than usual. something about you in this video makes me feel really upbeat.

good luck with the marathon and training! very noble and inspiring. i’ve been meaning to get into some diabetic causes in honor of my grandmother and a family friend.

on another note, i’d like to try a summer biathlon one day.

Yes… and listening to the beginning, I was like “Arghhh! This is so familiar….”. When she finally got to the chorus, I was completely suprised.

Happily of course. Coolio is, after all, still cool. Her version made it come off kinda country-rock instead of rap. Maybe she’ll YouTube it for all of you who couldn’t be there. ;-)

I am probably going to get blasted for this, but I’ll be honest anyway. I am not generally a big John Mayer fan; however, this song and his prior single aren’t bad. More importantly, Kina, you did a wonderful job! I’m proud of you for running a marathon, even more so that its purpose is so inspiring! Who cares if the blogs are a little later than usual? just over train yourself!

So cool to see all the parts you mixed for this song, and rather impressive for that matter. Truly you are a several trick pony

Y’know, with the multicolored string of paper, I really wanted you to pull it of your mouth or your ear or something. I just complimented you on your many talents; why not add a little legerdemain to that list?

In return I’ll learn Uke…of course, I was going to do that anyway, unless I decide that a desire to learn a thing should have more spontaneity than “I like a hawaiian things*, and cheap tiny cute things, and fretted stringed things…seems to fit”

*Ok, really just one Hawaiian thing, but it makes all hawaiian associations positive…and a bit wistful :)

sounded good to me… but i do like a little more bass.
were you close to the side walls or up front? cause that could also be why her vocals were drowned out and the low end seemed louder.
i was near the sound booth, cause thats where the best mix usually is…

and that second act was just LOUD….
glad you got by those musubi sniffing dogs safely.

Nice cover Kina…and capo-less too! That’s a rarity.

In high school in the late 80’s (you know…around the time you were BORN!) I ran cross country, and I remember the long runs well. I still do run a bit, but nowhere near as long as you’ll be doing in your marathon training. I’m very impressed you’re taking on this challenge. Just make sure you wear great shoes and don’t skimp on the carbs…you’ll need the energy! (And you don’t want to end up as skinny as the neck on your guitar!)

Have fun and remember…you can do it.

REGARDING HELP WITH SONG CHOICE 4 SINGING IN JAPANESE (:LOL cunningly putting it in Japanese;)

Maybe not a Japanese song, but Seal’s Kiss From A Rose (Batman Returns) would be a suitable song for K or K+E or M+K+E to try, as you will probably find it very easy to get the English Lyrics, etc, if you don’t know it already, and people will most likely know it as you’re singing it in Japanese, plus you could switch over into English part way through like in the following link within the Cherryblossom Garden(:-

http://www.cherryblossom-garden.com/1/angelaaki1.5.html#rose

2 get an idea of what you (K) would most likely sound like, check out this snippet at(:-

http://web-cache.chocomaru.com/jplayer.html?G_655&d%7C%7F20k%7Fb51&EJ66703261&5&nrrv%3C%29%29qqq%28hciqoha%28ei%28lv%29rtgemY%60itYebl%28nrkj9MC_%3BCUEJ+4%3E5%3E&7477%3F67741

& 4 M+E’s ba da dums and entertainment check out(:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0uPYqWR1zE

If you don’t think it suitable, there’s plenty more Artist/Songs/Lyrics to peruse within those links, but hey, what about your Gaelic roots too(:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZtuv-mP5r0

Also, You Tubes jenny0285 likes ukes, so I’m pretty sure she’d appreciate your latest video Kina and I hope to see your fingers doing much more manoeuvring around those black and white notes in future videos, here’s someone having a try at Kiss From A Rose on a Steinway, so maybe we’ll be hearing a better version of the song from you on yours sometimes soon:)

I wish you good luck along the way in ahieving the stamina to have the stamina to complete the marathon at the appointed time and THANK U 4 having been a You Tube friend till I closed my account Kina8D and wonder whether your 1st Taylor was Josh Halverson’s beforehand, as it looks the same/similar enough 2b it?

As for your marathon training, I admire your dedication and it is definitely for a very good cause. Those who have been affected by the illness and those that are fighting it as we speak are greatful for caring individuals like you. The passion and generosity you show is wonderful.

I forgot to put this link in my last comment(:[-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6u13MLLWlo

but as either my trying to put it in, made my previous comment fail:( or the comment was not suitable to pass the moderator (Misa maybe?) this is now just given for the moderator to see the link that I was going to add and to take note that I now don’t have a website, that’s why I put formerly imsabafa at You Tube, so that Kina knew who it was, plus I realised that my name wasn’t going to show once I’d pressed save, so I edited it to what it should have been.

So this whole comment is just to be read/discarded by the moderator because of the last post not having worked out – unless it’s just not showing up yet, in which case, please pop that link in somewhere by where it says about the famous make piano – sorry 4 having wasted your time, this is the kind of thing that made me close my You Tube/other places previous to that – things just don’t work out and I run out of patience! I’ll not bother you anymore, although I was only trying to be of help. Probably permanent bye but still wish you all good luck.

i am seriously honored and flattered and honored that u feel that way dr g! it means so much… it really does! i will video tape me and kina’s (and chris’s) set on thursday and u can watch it on video? lol

Just got back from the show at UC Riverside benefiting Gawad Kalinga which raises money for the underprivileged in third world countries. All the performers were great… and in particular, our own Emceemiko! Meeks rocked the house (except that it was outdoors) and he knows how to work the crowd! Got to meet the exceptional Chris Cendana as well… what a musician (and nice guy too). The UCR people were awesome! Except for the gnarly traffic (and parking ticket…grrr), the evening was outstanding!

Hi!

I stumbled across your videos on youtube a couple of days ago and just want to say that I have since been in love with your music!!!

I’d also like to ask a really out of order question so feel free to say no!!

I’ve been kicking around some lyrics for a while but have no musical ability so was wondering if you’d take a look. You’d be free to change whatever and create a melody, but I understand you’re seriously busy right now and can’t.

So, yeah. . . keep posting!!!

Hey guys, aloha from Hawaii!!!

Seems like I missed out on a bit, but I’m sure glad I got to check out the El Rey show right before I left the mainland =)

@ The Grannis Family – Great to see you all again! Always love hangin around the merch table with Mama G, and Emi, good luck with your whole transferring thing =). Kina, awesome show! I’m sad that unfortunate situations made me late, but I enjoyed what I managed to catch. I’ll have to post the video of me “spreading” the Kina love on the islands soon =P

@ Russ and Ernie – Good seeing you guys again as always. Ernie, you’re a sneaky guy, haha. And Russ, awesome footage of Gangster’s Paradise :)

@ Emceemiko – It was great to finally meet you!!! You are an awesome guy for sure. I’m sad I couldn’t catch your show at UCR, but I’m sure it was awesome sharing a show with Kina and Chris!

@ everyone else – HI!

i really heart… no let me just say it. I LOVE MAMA G!

i hung out with mama g MORE than i hung out with kina hahaha. it’s true!

i kept honoring you to my dad and my dad agreed mama g.

“yanno dad… kina’s mom (i didnt know how it would sound to say mama g to my dad lol) is really nice.. she is so genuinely nice…”
and my dad nodded and was like “yeah she is a nice lady” in his filipino accent

i’ve hung around mama g enough that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE when she says her famous phrase “yanno what…” or “and yanno what” followed by a very insightful comment… it’s so cute

dr g, kina, misa, emi – do u notice ur mom saying “and yanno what…” or is that just me? i think it’s so adorable!

meeeks!
what an honor and time i had in LA
i am a huge fan of kina, and i see her show the first day i land. and then i end my vacation with getting to do a show and open up for her..
who gets to say that about a musician they are a fan of?!
i was mad spoiled! how blessed i am!

Week 5: O-MC in the house! Remixin your questions for the One and Only KG.

Yo! Miko, I got your back. We MCs got to stick together. So I’m remixin your questions from last week. Give me a beat!

Fried, mashed
Scalloped or hashed
Roasted, toasted
Maybe broasted
How do you like your—- potatoes(?)?

Ok, I’m not so good at this. So much for the MC thing. Here are the rest my interpretations of emceemiko’s questions:

What has been your most thrilling and fun experience, not involving SB XLII?
What is the most exotic food you have eaten?
Which of your sisters would be interested in dating a hip-hop CPA? HAHAHA

And to round it out, one of my own:
What is the furthest distance you have run?
