oovret: week 29
Happy YouTube Anniversary!

How long did it take to create the “Message From Your Heart” video entry?
the non-professional one? hmmm… probably about 6 hours. it was my first video ever, i had no idea what i was doing… and as it got later into the night, i started getting weirder ideas to try out (ie the beating heart drawing)…
How long did it take to get your first “random” subscriber?
that’s a great question… i actually don’t know! but i wish i did. probably after i posted the akon cover “don’t matter”
Who are some of your YouTube subscriptions/favorite YouTubers?
oh dear… here we go with favorites again. i keep up with a ton of youtubers and find them all to be quite talented. i could start listing them, but i’d probably forget someone and then feel really awful about it.
When you posted your first video did you imagine that exactly a year later you would be in a studio recording an album with Interscope Records?
hahaha. NO. that’s a funny thought.
Now that it has been discovered, will the punching bag be used?
i think it’s my neighbors so i’ll probably stay off. plus, i remember back in my karate days, punching things always burst a lot of capillaries between my knuckles and made them look all bloody under my skin which creeps me out.

Woot. Have to wait for the vid to finish slowly streaming so I can download it and convert to Quicktime and watch it all the way through.

Is it really only a year? How many decades does it feel like?

It took a while before you went into the studio, did you and the team do a lot of prep before you started recording and if so, do you think it actually made things go faster once you actually got going?

Kina,
This song has some of the most calming, beautiful, and personally touching lyrics I’ve heard in a long while. Its a great cover. I’ve heard the original recording and in my opinion, your voice with your guitar deliver the message of this song with more emotion and influence than the original. Great work… though you didn’t need to hear that from me.

I feel so special that I got a birthday shout out, thanks so much kina it makes turning 17 even more sweet, now one more year until i lose all my money to indian casinos. Great cover again, I wish all artists could cover songs and turn them into their own. But then again that is what makes Kina so incredible.
I had to watch each of the videos listed to see which ones were my favorites, I almost forgot about please remember because when I listened to it I had a sudden urge to pick up my guitar and figure it out, but that is one song I voted for as well as people, and the goldfish song. Secretly I think I might vote for all of them once so no songs feel left out.

you sounded great outside. a little wind noise, but no weird computer noises!

Thank you for the shoutout Kina<it3 V.v. surprised and happy to have had it = I’m stunned but loving it though8D

Much relieved to have heard that you are all safe! Was it the usual winds and the oils in the bushes making the fires spread too rapidly to control?

I also hadn’t heard this song before either!

Have you heard David’s Heart song yet, it’s really good but unfortunately he didn’t sing it clean, which is the way I like to hear his singing, perhaps you could persuade him or even lend an extra delicacy to it by covering it yourself or converting it a tad to do a dreamy duet together sometime, should be really lovely for us:)

Seriously looking forward to seeing some studio footage!

Oh and no Kina, it is You Tube that ‘Too Soon’ keeps being unavailable for viewing = semi phew hey, way better than it being off of iTunes! I expect I’ve not put it clearly enough, I need to sleep more than I do, shame Heima didn’t work out, it would be really handy for inducing sleep! Do you normally put it on to help you drift off to the land of nod?

Sheesh, I almost couldn’t think to input this:))

It’s a wonder how small gestures like wishing someone a happy birthday on a video can make one so infinitely cheerful and smiley, especially when attached to such a beautiful song. Once again thank you and God bless!

I think you just made my month Kina. When I went to watch Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and this song came up at the end, I got major goosebumps from it and immediatly recognized Regina’s voice. The minute I came home I looked up the song and I must have played it at least 15 times on repeat.

So when I checked this morning to see what news was on your blog, I got goosebumps even before I started the video. It lived up to any expectation I had. You made a touching cover out of it and I love it. Also, I don’t know when you got the request to do this song, but I’m gonna throw one out there as well. Maybe one day you’ll find the time to do it :). I’d like you take on a Sara Bareilles song. There are multiple options, so i’ll just list them: City, Between the Lines, Gravity or even her own cover of Sullivan Street (Counting Crows song).

But first of all, good luck with working on the album of course!

and i’m so sad it’s been so long since i’ve been on here.
and that my visiting hours to this site are always so sporadic.

my monday was terrible. it consisted of writing a paper until 3:30am sunday night/monday morning, falling asleep at my laptop, waking up at 7:30 to finish the paper, finishing it half an hour before class and forgetting that i still had to do the bibliography, and then freaking out because it wouldn’t let me print it 10 minutes before class!! ahhh!…. good thing it finally worked.

but… i guess it got better because i got an amazing email from a friend, AND i got to see this amazing cover of a song i absolutely love (although i only got to watch it this morning.)

ps. i miss you all.
pps. i love you just as much as ever kina, i’m so sorry i’ve been slacking off on the blog front.

My mom asks every time “Who is this girl on his answering machine?” HaHa

Its spiritual when you can close your eyes to a song and can feel a beautiful warmth stirring inside yourself…

Keep on touching souls Kina :)

pS. I see a couple people wrote about Jack Johnson.. Please do a Jack johnson cover…. He’s my favorite artist in the world. And your my brothers Favorite artist. Like other people mentioned, a Jack Johnson would be great.
If you did a cover of Learning to Breathe or This is Your Life by Swtichfoot would make my birthday week the most amazing thing I’ve seen in my seventeen years =)

Kina, I think you’re great. I really do. But please, please, please don’t waste a tutorial video on The Goldfish Song. I realize that it’s everyone’s new favorite, but you can see your hands the entire time. And from the looks of it, you use one chord shape, and about four total chords. I didn’t stick around for the bridge (if there is one), but I’m sure it’s not difficult. Anyone who doesn’t pick up the song from watching your hands wouldn’t benefit from a tutorial video. I don’t mean to sound like a jerk, but the song looks too damn easy for a tutorial video. With that being said, you’re awesome. Keep on keeping on!

the beatles cover, “Blackbird” is a great song… a couple buddies of mine in high school sang that song w/ the arrangement done by the King’s Singers… look them up they r a good choral accapela group sustaining only guys… neways it turned out quite well… but i find that as long as it is done properly… ne one can make this song sound good bcuz the song is just elegantly beautiful… neways good request for kina… ive got one as well tho…

@ KINA… i have three requests(obviously u only have to do one, well really u dont have to do either… they r just suggestions that i think fit ur voice very well)…. if u could sing either “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” by John Mayer, “Nothing Fancy” by Dave Barnes, or “Until You” by Dave Barnes….. all of these r great songs…. i have a feeling i will be sending u more requests bcuz i find so many songs that i love that id love to hear u sing as well…neways ur great

Hey! We have another Wertz/Barnes/Maybe Andy Davis or Jon McLaughlin fan? in the house!

@Kina

I would like to amend my last comment. Maybe in your next tutorial, or some other time, you could reveal the chords for “Back to Us?” It’s a great song, a bit reminiscent of “I’m Yours,” but I’m having trouble hearing the chords over the speaking. I swore I’d never comment more than once on anything….oh well.

You got that right man… i love all those guy and have been talkin to matt about tryin to get them all on tour together once their CD’s r all released(i have an inside connection to Matt through University of Illinois fans… neways i am also aware than MAtt and Dave kinda did some stuff together just a little under a year ago, but he loves those guys soo)… but yea they r all great musicians and vocalists… i am also a huge huge huge John Mayer fan haha… i have no joke all his songs… even his covers and juss little random skit songs he does at concerts… love all these guys… sooo good… u can check my youtube account out to if u wanna see some of my favorite videos…. sooner or later when i get a video camera imma put some of my own songs up… neways heres the link dude:

in my honest humble opinion this was the first cover that actually was not better than the original. when you covered on the radio you left me breathless but this time around you left me with too much oxygen! in addition to that, i am disappointed that you say you are a fan of ginas and yet you did not know one of her most popular songs. she was very surprised as was i.

When I heard this song I cried and smiled at the same time. Kina really raises the bar. I love renditions because anytime KINA puts her own creative spin it makes the song so much more colorful and amazing. There truly is something about Kina’s creative style that blesses music.

I would love for Kina to play a song from another singer Boyce Avenue. They are found on Youtube and they are also amazing. Boyce Avenue is covering some of the exact same songs as Kina. They are both on the same record labels too so I wonder…is there a coincedence??? who knows?

my biggie favorite–alexpham will back me up here–are Banh Xeo – vietnamese pancakes they are crepes filled with yummy things like shrimp, sprouts and greens and lots of fish sauce (Nuoc Cham)

Emi and I have agreed we’re the same height. We’re both marginally below 5′4″ and prefer to not know who’s a millimeter taller than the other. ;) Kina is about 1/4″ shorter than the two of us, so yes, she’s the shortest but not by much.

All this talk of Vietnamese food is making me hungry. I wish I could go to one of the good restaurants near me with someone who knew their way around the menu. The only things I’ve ever gotten besides pho is some sort of roast pork, spring rolls (wrap ‘em in mint leaves!), the sandwiches OF COURSE, and some really yummy thing in big flat rice noodles that wasn’t even on the english menu (I was lucky enough to be able to point to someone else’s plate).

@alexpham – I saw a PBS show on American sandwiches. Little Saigon was on it, esp the banh mi. my mom-in-law brings me banh mi all the time. wow. just the baguettes are good enough on their own. the combo of the meats, pate and the pungency of the daikon, carrot and cilantro . . . we have Eden Center in Falls Church, VA which is the right-coast version. it’s wild and very intense – great crafts and lots of chintz – if you get past the day-glo paintings on black velvet there are really some nice things

@wwar1ace – she also brings me pho dac biet. am I corret that pho tai is the raw eye round that you put into the broth to cook at the table? It’s my favorite part. my wife used to call it round eye until I pointed out the cultural significance!! teehehehe

Alexpham said on...

thuff7 said on...

November 20, 2008

@alexpham – ur cracking me up. got some plans coming up??

we had a mixed wedding ceremony. it was in a small white church in a small virginia town in horse country, and the minister was a friend of mine. we had the traditional vietnamese altar with the buddha and persimmons with pictures of her grandparents and mine. we honored her aunts and uncles one couple at a time in chairs by the alter and we poured them tea. then said prayers to our ancesters all this was mixed in with the traditional protestant ceremony with the usual except NO WEDDING MARCH MUSIC. my friend played some CDs with acoustic songs we chose.

I did go to an all out traditional Vietnamese wedding for my wife’s cousin. It was gorgeous. I was the only caucasian there and every single one of the dozens of people all wanted to know how I liked it. it blew me away.

@ thuff7 its a mungbean che (well can’t spell it in viet so yea sorry maybe wwar1ace can help with spelling) and the older generation likes it, my great grandma loves them and they are so good the rice only though haha! yea there are many places in the OC but my favorite place to get it is at Che Cali near a store called ABC market on burshard i think…

Alexpham said on...

November 20, 2008

@ thuff7 that is kickbutt so yea glad you like the culture so did you ever go to Vietnam or you can wait until the boys grow up. well the older generation say that the younger one is spoiled so i went to vietnam to visit and see the country in 2005 for the first time i was 13 at the time. it was a inspirational experience because im catholic and i went to the place where Mary appeared called La Vang and there were poor ppl all around and begged for money. I remember an old woman begging and crying for money and food for her grandson that had third degree burns all ovr his face so when i came back i told myself that i would become a pediatrician and help as much as i can all around the world and plus i like to travel to any country and eat. o and i went to thailand days before the tsunami hit it was an amzing place i would go again. =(

*ahem*
Sorry to be a grammar nazi, but it’s porridge, not porage…makes me think of blackhead cereal…not very appealing.

thuff7 said on...

November 20, 2008

@alexpham – oh yeah, the karaoke. hehehe that’s a given. in NoVa, the vietnamese folks go to weddings the way people go clubbing. anyone is invited and there is usually around 150 people there. but you have to give bride a red envelope with $100 bucks. that buys you a banquet meal and the karaoke. the newlyweds make out pretty darn well.

sometimes a young band will do vietnamese pop and then leave the karaoke to the old folk. My wife and I went to one like that. the food was chinese, but really authentic but we had to excuse ourselves when the lights went up and the karaoke started.

Alexpham said on...

did the family travel alot when you girls were small and what was your favorite place and this question is to kina too?

@thuff7 lets get some recipes from your wife for che or other food and my mom and grandma taught me how to cook my food yay! love them both. =D

thuff7 said on...

November 20, 2008

@alexpham – never went to vietnam. My wife’s family went last spring and had lots of fun, but they forgot how hot and humid it was and it put a hurt on them.

Don’t think my wife would go. (the reason I think this is that she said no way!!) But I would love to. She was about 4 years old when the war ended and her family was put into a re-education camp. They escaped by boat to the Philippine and then eventually to the US.

i do have question about kina. if you can’t answer it, that’s fine.

before the whole crash the superbowl contest, did kina ever think that maybe her dream of becoming a performer may not be unattainable? and maybe that she had to go get a 9-5 job?

reason i ask is because when i watch those old videos of her performing at the malls, people just kind of walk on by…so was just wondering if this got her down at all?

i’m glad she never gave up though because her music is amazing.

Misa said on...

November 20, 2008

@confused newbie: You know, that’s a good question, and you’d have to ask Kina that one. :) I think she knew it might be a longshot, but it was her dream and she at least wanted to pursue it for as long as was realistic and/or practical. Come to think of it, she did tell me once (after graduation, before superbowl, when she was thinking of moving to Austin) that she figured she could pursue her dream of having a performance career for maybe a year, and if it didn’t pan out she’d find something more mundane to do, but if she didn’t give it a fair shot she might regret it for a long time, you know? We should all be very happy that she decided to stick it out. :)

@alexpham: I’m kind of a ramen addict myself, but there’s very little good ramen in NYC.

thuff7 said on...

sweet plugin. My music question: you played fiddle on the Nickel Creek cover “why should the fire die” and I thought it really made the song fly. It sounded a little folksy or had a touch of blue grass. did you ever play with a group? Do you think you’ll use it on another vid with kina?

Also Give me back from the marathon had a pretty tight band on it. What’s the history/origins of this recording? Electric kina was so on the money.

@ Harold sorry for your need of food

@ newb wat do u do for a living?

confused newbie said on...

November 20, 2008

@Misa:

i remember last xmas i was at a mall and there was this girl performing. the mall is an older mall so it’s not as busy as the newer, bigger malls around here but the girl who was singing had a terrific voice. there were only maybe 3 or 4 people watching her. i walked over and stopped and stood there and watched her sing 3 or 4 songs. i felt if she was nice enough to come out and perform that the least i could do was to give her my attention and time for a little bit.

i’m definitely glad that kina stuck it out. it would have been such a waste if she was stuck in a 9-5 job while all these wonderful songs sat in the closet of her room.

November 20, 2008

@newbs

Good for you. I always love to support anyone with the guts to stand up and sing their song.

I thought Kina’s mall visit wasn’t set up to her advantage as far I could see. It was in a high speed traffic spot where people would zip through to buy their stuff with their minds focused on a destination and getting there quickly. If she was tucked into a visible corner with a cozier backdrop and some tables and chairs, I bet she would have stopped more people to listen. I would have stopped in my tracks.

But I am so glad that didn’t get her down enough to bag it. I saw a YouTube “bootleg” of her singing “Message” at Hotel Cafe with the audience doing the “bum bums” and it was such a magical moment. I have had friends play for years and play very well, but rarely can someone connect with a crowd like Kina did right there.

confused newbie said on...

@alexpham I have little or no foreign language skills. My wife only speaks vietnamese with her mother and father, or if we go out to eat. I can pick up stuff but can’t speak it. But it’s probably cuz they speak their own mix of vietnamese/english.

funny: when we first got married, she and her mother would chatter away on something and look at me and laugh. hehehehe but I could figure it out by the context and facial expressions so for a while, they thought I could speak it. It stopped those games tho.

@Mama G:

My biggest peeve is the death of adverbs! I know an entire college (St. John’s in Annapolis) that boycotted Apple Computers for the slogan “Think Different.”

It’s obvious that grammar standards were well maintained in the Grannis household, to wit “Don’t break me, I bruise easily.” I think if she had said “I bruise easy” it would have been the same as performing the song with a big nuoc mam stain on her blouse–just too distracting to ignore. Who knows where we would be right now if that had happened?

Poetic license aside, it shows a respect for the written word when an artist crafts their work with a love for the language. So a debt of gratitude is owed to you, Dr. G and Kina’s teachers!

And for goodness sakes, we owe so much to Kina for using those language skills in a way that has touched all of our lives so graciously.

I owe an awareness of grammar to my sister who is the chair of the English department at a community college. Growing up, her looks of disapproval were as life-threatening as Emi’s are reported to be. ;-D

Of course, the fatal flaw of my writing is verbosity so TTFN.

I met my wife at college. We worked together on a long project. Lots of late hours . . . you get the picture. She has an MS in microbiology.

Misa has the gravatar image size set to 65 x 65 pixels. That will shrink your gravatar.com image down to that size. I would suggest you find a picture you like and shrink it to that size in photoshop or whatever image software you have. Be sure to preserve the aspect ratio. Then see if you like it that way. I played with the contrast/brightness on my heron to get it to show up better at that size. Images with good contrast or silhouettes like the heron work best.

All tickie, tockie parts are already as they should be:) Soiling is likely to remain a problem like before and although the gate is staggering/lurching, it doesn’t include the falling every which way that was the case previously, which was also an improvement on the inability to move at all that went before. Feeding is again by hand, but water is self managed this time around, and as for the dog, well … … …

Joking aside, the above things happen with humans too remember, and regarding my Mom, time itself is now the healer and privacy is sought, but thank you for your empathy Misa<it3

Have you noticed that You Tube are restricting the features of videos on my channel this time? A viewer could go blind trying to watch Kina there, perhaps that is why all the click links for covers/originals have been removed = they know what I’m like given half a chance;)

Unfortunately, the cool heart-beat lamps didn’t really show to their best advantage in the Super Bowl commercial version of the music video because of the heavy editing. You get what Jardin was going for in the long version. Sitting there, watching all the people make that video happen…. it was amazing. We were on the roof of an abandoned toy factory in LA with the production company and the Doritos bigwigs watching Greg’s vision unfold…. it was pretty chilly and they built this awesome greenhouse and filled it with plants and old lamps. It was just a fanciful little scenario of Kina creating a magical moment with her music.

One is helping to analyze the efficiency of a method for synthesizing nanoparticles that will be used to detect cancer markers in blood serum. The other is working with a grad student to detect toxin buildup in fish from a place where the fish have excess parasite infestations. Then the 3rd is to help my two mentees (2 women high school seniors from a prestigious sci and tech magnet school) work on their projects that will be entered into a state science fair. Mama G said on...

November 22, 2008

@thuff7: Wow…. you put that so nicely. Well, the reason Kina seemed okay in a short-sleeved outfit while everyone else was bundled up was that she was being trailed by a guy whose job was to follow Kina around with this gigantic heater on wheels…. and also, whenever they stopped shooting, people with hot tea, a warm jacket, and gloves rushed in to keep her warm. While we were watching, the food service brought around trays of warm quesadillas and hot chocolate. Just that little bit of catering to was enough to show you how easy it must be for celebrities to get wrapped up in that privileged kind of lifestyle. The Doritos people truly treated the finalists like rock stars: 5 star hotels, limos, incredible dining, unbelievable gift baskets, personalized electric guitars, not to mention that all of them were the most down-to-earth, friendly, amazing people.
Okay, that may have been TMI, but oh well….

@FinnFan:

Exactly! It’s a classic literary theme unfolding before our eyes in real time. Like any great story, it touches the emotion center in our hearts. (I would’ve said “psyche” but there’s a theme going on here! hahaha). You simply can’t help but be drawn into it.

I think the curtain is about to go up on Act III, and I’m cozy in my seat waiting and watching to see what happens next! But hey, no need for us to put any pressure on Kina to best her previous accomplishments. She could fold her cards now and be declared the winner. It’s just that I think the best is yet to come!

Oh, and it looks like the audience not only watches the show, but is an actor in it as well. Isn’t that awesome? We have the power to change the storyline. Let’s do our best to make the lead character look good!!

thuff7 said on...

November 22, 2008

@Mama G:

No, not TMI at all. Fascinating, really. After watching the vid so many times, it was amazing to see the reality behind-the-scenes. She was so warm and glowing as she sang. Seeing the contrast between that and the scene of people huddled up with hot chocolate was quite unexpected. Thanks again for sharing.

avweije said on...

November 22, 2008

Hi Kina,

I’m a beginning guitar player, or rather I’m trying to be one :P
I stumbled onto some of your vids while looking for guitar learning stuff and really enjoyed your songs, voice and energy.

You seem to give a lot back to your fans and I think that’s great. In response to your poll on what song to make a learning-vid of, I might have a different suggestion, not sure if it is possible ofcourse.

I myself don’t have a good voice, and at the moment, I am too busy with hitting the right strings, chords and rythm to also be able to sing at the same time (having to remember the words and everything is too much).

Would it be possible that you made a vid or mp3 or something, where you are just singing, maybe to a beat, but without any guitar play. I could then play the vid/mp3 and fill in the guitar bit myself, or at least attempt to.

Again, it’s just a question, not sure if that’s hard to do or not.

Oh, I also love the birthday wishes you do, my birthday was the 2nd of october and I don’t feel like waiting 10 more months, so could you possible put my name up on your next bday greetings?

hehe, it’s Adriaan by the way, just in case you’re crazy enough to do it :P

Take care, the best of luck with your career and I hope to be back here many more times

But I loved the “Message” vid b/c there is quite a bit left for the viewers’ interpretation. I also really liked the scenes when she was traveling there like a commuter going to work for the day. Another day at the office, taking blood and making art. That’s just one way to see it.

Wow. It’s been busy in the Kination.

@Misa. Sorry your job came to end though I had the impression you might’ve been half expecting it so hopefully it wasn’t too much of a shock. I hope that this turns out to be more of an opportunity for you in the long-term than anything else. And hey, it never hurts to have a bit of time off right? :-) (Especially since US companies seem to be such meanies with how much paid holiday they give.)

@Vietnamese Food Fans. I have to admit I have absolutely no clue about anything Vietnamese but there must be something to it since it seems so popular with you guys.

@syntax & semantics observers. I think there is a line somewhere but I don’t really know where it should be. I do think language is about communication, and as long as the message is conveyed, absolute grammatical perfection is not necessary. I also think that people should care about how they communicate and that lower standards is indicative of something. Language also evolves though – the english we speak in Britain today is markedly different from the english that was spoken here in the past. It’s also significantly different from the english spoken in the US for instance. I know that’s true of all other languages as well.

That said, there is a personal satisfaction in finding the right words and grammar to convey things in the most elegant way. Sadly, I know I fall short of this quite a lot on a day to day basis but that doesn’t stop me trying for things where I feel it most matters.

Hope everybody is having a great weekend, recording is going well, Hi to all the new people etc. etc.

@Windscale:

Hello windscale. I wanted to say hi before it became too late for you. Thanks for the observations on language. Very well said. I think much of our discussion occurred with tongue firmly in cheek, but we do see so much IM speak spilling over into everyday life here. At university, we actually see formal reports written with LOL’s and ur’s and the like. It’s fun to play with online, but there’s a time and place . . .

My favorite discussion was watching British actor Hugh Laurie on TV (telly that is. See also: Penguin on the) talk about the tribulations of using an American accent and diction for his character Gregory House. In it, he uses his American accent to caricature a British idiom. It was a riot but it showed the worst habits of both versions.

Nice to chat. All the best to you.

November 22, 2008

@thuff – that’s why I tend to like formal and logical things since at least then correctness is a lot less subjective. I never really did amazingly well at English literature at school since I’m not that analyzing of that sort of thing. For me, “entertainment/like” things tend to fall into three categories – I like, I don’t like or “whatever” (said in Clueless style.) I found that teachers didn’t tend to give any marks for that though!

Still up :-(. Flew home from NorCal yesterday/today but my body still thinks its only 2100 despite not really sleeping on the plane. That and the small matter of going from 24-28 degC to 4 degC! Actually, I think its supposed to be something like 1 deg at the moment. Still, can’t complain, at least I got to get my summer running gear out again for an extra month whilst I was there.

thuff7 said on...

November 22, 2008

@Windscale:

I can’t sleep on planes either. That’s a long flight. San Fran to Heathrow? That is a big temp change. We could use some NorCal or SoCal weather here in Northern Virginia. My wife ran a 5K today, and it was -4 degC and 15 knot winds. I felt bad until I saw a die hard 70 yr old man in shorts and T-shirt. He clearly beat the senior class. Hope you have a quiet day to regroup tomorrow!

I got passed on the last surrey league cross country race I did by a guy in his 70s on the last lap and I couldn’t stay with him :-). (Bad day, started too fast.) You gotta look out for those vets – they can be deceiving! Can’t wait till I get out of the senior category!

Well, we left about 1900 Pacific and got in at 0510 Pacific so just over 10 hours. But, you tend to get the gulfstream coming back from USA to UK – I think it was 11 hours or so on the way out.

His name is Chris Reyes (ChrisR612). The song he wrote is called “When You Wake Up”. The lyrics are pretty cool and his voice is really, really good.

Check it out (I apologize if someone’s already mentioned this and if I’m the last guy to know this)

My question: what is the main thing you´ve learned during these past few weeks?

In all the planning and preparation for the holiday, I confess to overlooking the reason for having it in the first place. oovret has reminded me in a most gracious manner. I echo oovret’s thanks to Kina and her wonderful family in the sincerest way possible. But I am also grateful to all the fantastic people whom I have met in this blog for their kindness, patience and mutual appreciation for each other.

@jess1225: I can’t speak for emi, though I know she’d probably like nothing more than to not have to work and just hang out and tour and do musiciany things with Kina all the time, but I myself wouldn’t have what it takes unless I were in it solely to be kina’s backup singer. (Not quite a lead vocalist m’self.) Though I’m probably the kind of backup singer that would put their life on hold for a band, then when the band got big the manager would convince the lead singer that I was holding them back. I don’t really like the spotlight much anyway, so I’m happy to enjoy fame vicariously through Kina. :)

The visibility is fantastic, and I can see the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park from our upstairs windows. Usually, it’s too smoggy in to see that far and at best, the mountains look, uh, blue. Now they look green/brown. We were there for the peak fall foliage which was great this year from plenty of rain in the late summer/early fall.
cheers.

November 23, 2008

@asdf: Thank you, and thanks to everyone who’s given their condolences. I feel I should clarify, though, so no one thinks I was incompetent–they basically fired everyone in the entire company, so I don’t feel singled out. :) A year and a half ago, my company was overambitious and hired 130 people to bring our corporate office staff up to around 400. Last December they laid off about that many people when they realized their eyes were bigger than their stomachs. Then in July they laid off probably close to 100 more people and filed for bankruptcy protection, in August they were bought by a hedge fund and hired a couple new department heads, and finally last Monday they decided they weren’t going to make it through holiday so they kept on about 25-30 of the remaining staff (probably just under 100 since the whole time since last Dec. we’d been losing people steadily to attrition) and fired everyone else. They’ll close out the entire chain by the end of 08 or early 09, and then the company will be no more :)

So really, I don’t feel that bad. I miss the benefits of the paycheck, but the company was crazy and I DID make it through 2 rounds of layoffs before they threw in the towel. Now I’m freed up to work on other projects and take a little time for myself before I find my next opportunity. :)

You *are* right on the coast! My college roommate lived in Lynn for a while. When we were in school, we lived on the NJ coast, and I pretty well grew up there (except for about 6 years outside Sacramento, CA when my father was a pilot in the air force).

I’m landlocked now, and never knew how much I would miss having the seafood markets so close, esp. for clams and mussels that need to be fresh.

No Name is/was a restaurant in S Boston near the waterfront where you could get a huge pile of seafood for a few measly bucks. You eat/ate elbow to elbow with whomever else was there on big folding tables and chairs. No amenities at all, not even a name.

Have you had one of life’s greatest pleasures of seeing her live?

TimR said on...

November 23, 2008

@thuff7: Gather round children, for I have tales to tell. ;)

Unfortunately I haven’t seen her live, yet. She’s done a lot of shows in the past year, but she’s only done a few outside California, one in New York, another one or two in Austin. I think that’s it outside CA in 2008.

I’ll add a few brief snippets of things I recall from “This Year in Kinaland” below. And of course everyone is encourage to chime in with their 2 cents.

Misa said on...

November 23, 2008

@FinnFan: Yeah, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. :) My greatest challenge in my job search will be trying to convey that just because the company failed does not mean I was bad at my job :)

TimR said on...

November 23, 2008

I’m not going to rehash everything, but I’ll add my experience following Kina.

Crash the Super Bowl #1:
I always looked forward to watching the then-daily blog posts at twoweeksforkina.com before going off to work. And even though they were meant to encourage people to vote for her on MySpace, I never remembered to vote until later in the day.

TimR said on...

November 23, 2008

Crash the Super Bowl #2:
Being a statistician, I looked for data before they announced the winner to see what was going to happen. At the time, Kina has around 5000 Myspace friends, with the other 2 finalists, Nivla and Landon Austin, having about 10,000 and 3000, respectively. Then, I looked at the number of comments on the Crash the Super bowl MySpace page. About half were pro-Nivla, a third were pro-Kina, and the rest were pro-Landon. Given that data, I had pretty much convinced myself that Kina was going to come in second (and I’ve never posted that until now). That made it that much more of a pleasant surprise when “Message…” started playing after the first quarter.

Crash the Super Bowl #3:
A few months later, a lot of us who voted got messages asking for our addresses so that Doritos could send us iTunes gift cards. Most thought it was just going to lead to junk mail, but since I already get a lot of junk mail anyway I sent them my address. Sure enough, a few weeks later a $10 iTunes card showed up.

Should I keep going with these or am I irritating people? My feelings won’t be hurt if yes.

thuff7 said on...

November 23, 2008

Please, go on, I’m all ears.

After years of playing the sport, watching it around the clock and then working in a sports bar, I just had enough football, so we stopped following it a few years ago. It ate into our mental energies and consumed too much time. So I missed the whole contest. Wow, total bummer. So hearing it relived from you, Mama G and others is fascinating. Do go on, sir.

evann said on...

November 23, 2008

word! continue, wise village elder!

TimR said on...

November 23, 2008

Ok, one more, on a slightly different subject…

NASCAR Race:
The post with the most comments up until now (and maybe still now) was the week that Kina was scheduled to sing the National anthem before a California race in February, broadcast nationally by FOX. But there was rain. So that whole Sunday afternoon was – are they going to get the race started? Is Kina going to get to sing? Is it still going to be on TV? But finally, after a few hours – and believe me, to us non-race fans watching at home, it was a LOOOOOONG few hours of NASCAR talk – the rain cleared and Kina was on TV singing, and I guess they had a race or something, but I don’t really know because I stopped watching at that point. For everyone who hasn’t seen it, it’s on YouTube here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3y3vrrBm84

It’s still the only time I’ve seen her sing without a guitar/uke.

Anyone else wanna jump in with their unique perspective on anything I’ve typed, or the other stuff (live shows) that I could only make up? Someone should chime in with some Gotta Digg stuff. I’ll admit I wasn’t a fan at that point – only a few days later when I saw an online interview about it.

I heard about Kina the day after Christmas 2007. Request. Repeat if necessary.

Although maybe it should be called “I Know Who Took the Milk and Tim Tams.”

November 23, 2008

OT question here (if there actually is a T). I am an IMDb junky. (Internet Movie Database) I love randomly searching through shows and actors’ careers to see where it all leads. One of the few TV shows I like is “House” or as my sons say “How’s the Doctor?” So I was looking down the list of guest actors who just seem to give their best performances on this show (see Dave Matthews). One of the actors is Ken Choi. His bio led to a show called Samuri Girl and low and behold, Kina and David Choi played on the soundtrack. Are David and Ken related? Striking family resemblance.

This is one of those “Small World” theory questions like the 5 Degrees of Bacon. Totally fascinating to me.

It looks like g3mini could start up a business with Misa doing the marketing!!

TimR said on...

November 23, 2008

Speaking of Doritos, here’s something I always wondered (and feel free to count this as an oovreT question):

The rate to advertise on the Super Bowl was $3 million per 30 second spot. The “Message from Your Heart” commercial ran for 1 minute, meaning they spent $6 million to air it. If they had just said, listen, we’ll split the $6 million with you and not run the ad, what would you (Kina) have done?

I’ve been playing the directors cut of “Message” a number of times in the background. It’s like a favorite movie, each time I find some little nuance that I didn’t notice before, but which is just so cool. At first I thought the lamps were a discovery, but after looking, it’s clear she’s checking them to see that they are working the way they’re supposed to. Maybe I’m just dense and this is painfully obvious to everyone but me, but hey, it won’t stop me from hitting that arrow again!

When 98% of the people who watch your videos and listen to your songs can say: “You have a beautiful voice” or that they “love you”.. then you are doing everything right. The other 2% are the type of people who don’t have the ability (read: disabled) to appreciate or to compliment. But don’t worry, keep on doing what you do and they will learn.

Congratulations so far on all your progress and thank you for lifting up our spirits in this sometimes crazy cruel world.

sorry… had to do it :)

TimR: that’s a tough question you pose. A video during the Super Bowl or 3 million dollars? That video got her a lot of exposure but I’m guessing 3 million could do a lot for getting your music/face/name out there too

… and btw, I got a Crash the Super Bowl itunes card too!

You are too funny! =D Of course you have the inside line on TimR’s question, but I’m surprised you chose the money.

It depends on the terms of the deal — does she keep the studio time, recording contract, etc.?

I think she would stick with the air time. First, she came chasing a dream, not a payoff. Second, $3M won’t buy the same level of publicity as that time at Superbowl halftime and third, she gets a really great resume line for having it air.

Windscale said on...

November 24, 2008

Which makes we wonder something. Are running tracks in the US still 440 yards or have you bitten the bullet and converted to 400m tracks?

Windscale said on...

November 24, 2008

In the UK, road signs are still in miles,

Its still only legal to sell draft beers and cider in pints (we have an exemption from EU legislation for that – on the continent its half litres and litres),
but wine has converted to metric – 175ml and 250ml,
and spirits have converted from gils to metric units but I don’t remember what the measure is,
possibly you can still buy milk in pints too.

I think all other things sold by weights and measures have to be in metric although you can mark an equivalent imperial measure as well as a “supplementary marking.”

By the time I started school, they didn’t really teach the old imperial units so miles is the only one I really use on a regular basis and I find most of them quite confusing. Personally, I’d be happy if they slowly converted everything over but there are lots of people still who are clinging on to the past!

And a final random thought before I go back to tidying up and putting stuff away…

What happened to the Black Takamine guitar? The koa Taylor seems to be most popular at the moment and I’m guessing the other is a spruce top but what about the Takamine? Is it broken (pickup?), fallen out of favour? can’t get compatible strings anymore? (admittedly not likely!)

Can’t find no sleeves for my records
Can’t get no laces for for my shoes
Can’t get no fancy notes
On my blue guitar
Can’t get no antidote for blues

Ok, its obvious that it’s much easier to use mm than 1/32″, but i meant do you use the others (meter, km, litre) as well? Or do you know if somebody is 190cm tall, how tall is he/she approximately in feet or vice versa? (i don’t :), the only thing i know is that a reel of utp cable is 305m which is 1000 feet -nerd alert- ;) but i’m ok with mph>kmph conversion, and totally lost in farenheit to celsius).
Here (Hungary) we use inch for buying a monitor for a computer (but the tvs are in cm -i guess because you can write a bigger number to it in centimeters :) ), or for some engineering stuff (for the heating system you buy a 1/2″ pipe), but everything else is in metric.

@asdf:

I use metric exclusively for my laboratory research. Liters, grams, deg Celsius, meters. Actually, I work at very low measurements–nanograms, microliters. I need metric units since my measurements require many decimal places. But I also need to function in the outside world with miles, inches and 1/4 inch wrenches. But those darn fractions are nothing more than unfinished math. The problems come up in converting between the two. That’s why all attempts for the US to go metric fail.

But I guess the other side of the coin is that musicians probably would prefer to play in 3/4 time, not 0.75 time!!

Healthy. Very healthy.

I think I can get the hang of this thing.

@jmesteban:
Which cerulean?

PB35
or
PB36

PB35’s warmer and a healthier choice = not got the chrome,
so I guess that’s Kina’s choice, am I right?

Hold on, it might be my fault, I’ve got it on at 200%! I’ll just go and put it back to normal. Right, tell the others if it’s made you grow relative to the You Tube screen, as I’m offskis nowsies:d

@Alexpham:

12:10 AM on Tuesday. Getting ready to call it a day. Lot’s of fun here today. Went to my son’s 1st grade Thanksgiving play!! Then telecommuted and had a chance to keep the bla(h)g up on one of my browser tabs while I worked from home. VPN lets me log into the lab computers and run my chem analysis remotely from home. I get more done home than in the office without all the interruptions. But there I go all geeky.

Talk to you soon.

Alexpham said on...

November 24, 2008

@ thuff7 what did your son do for the play he was probably the main character huh?

thuff7 said on...

November 24, 2008

Don´t worry about the blog. As you can see, we´ve found a way to keep us entertained… this is totally insane, but I would explain this as a psychological reaction: we want to show you our support but there isn´t really anything we can do to help you in the studio… and this is the best equivalent we can think of… we love you :)

@thuff7:
Wow… a SINGING pumpkin! Eerrr… I don´t know anything about American Thanksgiving traditions, but it sure sounds like an important role. Any plans trying for Hollywood next? Does he have an agent already?
