around that age, you’re right. my niece is around that age & if she sees me with headphones on, she wants to listen. one day, i was listening to my japanese lessons & so i put the headphones on her & she was repeating everything. hehe… she now knows how to identify some of her body parts.

@thuff7: I don’t actually, although I spent a lot of time on the beach and at the lake (not the duck pond, veerse meer lake). I had had some surgery on my left ear when I was a kid and need earplugs for showering and swimming, so watersports are not something I do a lot.

@thuff7: Do kids get confused? They learn a foreign language and then in school they need to speak english. That’s what happened to one of my brothers. He knew a different language and had trouble in school and mixed it up with english.

Well, yes, I guess so. But the kids I know who have troubles are the ones whose families speak a foreign language (usually Chinese around where I live) and never really learn to communicate with the other children. That’s tough.

@maryannee: my dad was dutch and my mom was english, I grew up in holland, but my mom spoke mostly english for our earlier years, so my brother and I grew up bilingual and never really had any problems with it.

I was quite good in speaking german at a younger age too, cause we used to go there a lot on holidays. I think you pick it up easier then, but maybe need to use it enough to make it work.

@thuff7: it is a great place to live :) love going to the beach, love being around water and it’s nice and quiet here too. As for the climate, it’s like most of holland, lot of changing weather, quite some rain, wind, sun, we had some wet snow today here. When I was younger we could iceskate every year, but haven’t been able to for a long time now.

The land looks so good cause we are so close to the sea, which helps the soil and then I think we are pretty knowledgable in holland when it comes to farming.

As an example, my mom lives 15 minutes from here (more inland), she gave me some plants that wouldnt take off at her place, dug them in the ground and within a week they took off here.

Most anything will grow here.

All this talk of bribery is reminding me of how I strongly considered offering my newly purchased nutella banana crepe from the Creperie down the street from The Living Room to Rosie and Sufjan in exchange for a picture. I literally walked straight past them outside the club as I was going from the creperie to the subway station (it was my consolation for being chicken). If I were braver, I would have done it. I guess in all these situations I should just ask myself, “What would Kina do if someone offered her a nutella banana crepe?”

@maryannee: 7 years, wow, I’d like to hear something sometime :) and thank you for the compliment, I am spending a lot of time with it at the moment and I can see I’m improving, so that makes it fun to keep at it. As for the singing, you are not the first to ask, but at the moment if I start to sing I lose track of what I am playing. When I get it I will post something, however good/bad it sounds ;)

It’s always just green in the house and white lights outside. What kind of themes are there? Do you have one??

@Mama G: Speaking of hazards, one time Paco turned on the hazard lights of my rental car. It is scary coming to your car and seeing the hazards on, lol

@maryannee: Theme wise, I’ve only had colors, silver and blue but they are designed for the big tree. I have only set up the small one, so it is a mosh pit of ornaments and decorations. My Mom has had themes of snowmen, reindeer, even nutcrackers…. she can get really creative at times. The house is literally transformed, it is kinda cool.

Is everyone waiting to get closer to 900? Awfully quiet out there. I figure the countdown to listening to the new CD is less than 3 hours, barring complications, such as a daughter who might say that we too should be surprised. Could happen. Hope not.

@maryannee: All the ornaments that I ever made were given to the tree at my Mom’s house, but they were mostly when I was a boy. The ones here are gifts or unique trinkets that I have acquired through the years since college. The ornament I was probably the most proud of back then was a truncated icosahedron, or a soccer ball made out of pentagons and hexagons… can you say geeky :-) Of course it was decorated and colorful too.

Don’t worry about the 900 mark, we would not even have come close without you ;-)

@maryannee: Actually it is not that hard. The ones I made were from paper and like most math related items there is a trick to it. The hardest part is actually making the pentagon. Once that is done, it is a matter of making a template and repeating. Believe me, any elementary kid can do it from that point. I’ll put some instructions up in the forum when I have a chance. What was your favorite decoration?

Crazy Food: I’ve had frog legs and alligator tail, and little baby (cooked) octopus. Not entirely adventurous, but not quite mainstream. I found I really like amaranth, but it isn’t easy to find a store that has it.

Most favorite movie… but there are so many! If I HAD to choose, it would probably be “The Dark Crystal”, followed closely by “Tron”, then it’s a toss up between “Goonies” and “The Breakfast Club”. I probably lose a lot of “geek cred” for not listing Starwars or StarTrek or Indiana Jones or ET, and as much as I love the TV series Firefly, Serenity didn’t make it either.

That’s interesting, I type something in at 11pm, and it shows up after midnight. I thought this bla(h)g ran on Pacific time? *SHRUG*

I say 5 and not 10 or 20 or all because I don’t want patrons/employees getting annoyed and associating any negative feelings with Kina and her music…. although I’d like to think that they’d ultimately be happy to be exposed to it :) So the next time you pass an Apple store, go for it!

Those little things worked for me. Nathan has something like asthma. He’s on albuterol and singular. One of my upcoming projects will be looking at leukotrienes (may cause asthma) to help find out how they can be controlled better.

yeh i did work today..

Mine was a jimmy eat world concert well it was a compilation of bands in a radio concert called weenie roast yup KROQ 106.7 itwas awesome and now for my winter break i am spending so much on concerts this year and yea hopefully kina’s over here in the 818-valley =)

i love when people order 120 mini pastries and then give us two telephone numbers that don’t work.. and then never pick up their order ;) oh whats that? did ne1 hear money going down the drain?

hahaha!! I had a pizzeria for a number of years. The big joke was calling up, ordering 3 pies with the works for delivery and sending them to the neighbor as a joke or as a form of revenge. They don’t realize the target of their joke can’t be forced to pay. Then we started checking the phone number they gave us with the caller ID. (This was before you could hide your number). Even with the phone number of the person ordering, the police wouldn’t intervene. It seems a phone order isn’t a legal commitment to make a purchase, so no crime done. I’d have to sell a lot of pizzas before the low markup covered the loss in ingredients. Sometimes you get another order in time to swap them out while they’re still hot and fresh, but not if they had anchovies!!!!

So, anyway, hope you have some good coffee to go with those pastries!!

Oh, and we learned to give call backs to confirm big orders b4 we made them.

And, while we’re on unrelated stuff, pomegranates are extremely messy. I, as well as my kitchen, shirt, and pants, learned that the hard way. I guess there’s a reason the juice is so expensive.

Also, just to clarify a few points: These are songs she hinted at recording. In no way are they guaranteed to be in her current list of 12, or the final album. Lastly, the Cambridge hint wasn’t from a Twitter post that I could find, but I do remember the hint being given so it might have been a blahg post.

Yup, in Italy, it’s called salami. Had an Italian join our research group. Took her to a NY pizzeria. She couldn’t understand a word of their Italian and wondered why they call salami pepperoni!!

@confused newbie: I like making my own pizza, I use a naan bread, so far a simple sauce and change the cheese and toppings around a bit. At the moment it’s the sauce that needs work, I’ve tried a couple of things but none that really got me going.

Ok, now everyone… what is this??? I leave for a few days to visit my mother, and when I come back, comments have increased from 500 to almost 1300!! This has to stop!! Next time I visit my mother, please take a break from commenting… otherwise, I can´t go at all, and it´ll be your fault if my mom is left all alone… ;)

(Ok, I speed read all the comments, it didn´t take more than half an hour… but right now I´m even more confused than Confused newbie…)

Congrats for almost completing the cd. I have never before followed the process of album recording, and I´ve been excited, like everyone else here. It´s a funny feeling, to know (most) songs that will be on the album. To know with certainty that the album will be good. I was happy to see how people here are already planning how to promote your album… because soon will be the phase when we can actually do something for you… and I want to wish all of us good luck with that – let´s give Kina reasons to be as proud of us as we are of her :)

Used good crushed tomatoes, garlic, salt, pepper, basil (easy does it), a good pinch of oregano and a touch of good olive oil. then simmer just below the boiling point for 3-4 hours. Be careful not to scorch it.

@thuff7: I think you said it there, simmer for 3-4 hours. I’ve thought about doing it a few times, but everytime I leave it to the last second and need an instant sauce.

They (chefs and such) talk about something that happens when you simmer it for a long time, new flavors release or something.

Nathan and I just did a little geography fun on Google Earth. We noticed that south of Nord-Beveland, there is a body of water that looks like a channel or bay. It seems like it is isolated from the sea. Is that a canal lock on the southern shore all the way to the east?

@thuff7: it is called the “veerse meer”, meer=lake, there is a town on the lake called “veere”, so I’m sure the name comes from there.

On the west there is a road, a dike and then the beach (not connected), on the east there are bridges and it connects to the oosterschelde (or westerschelde) 2 bigger bits of water above, below, connecting to the sea.

There is a tide, but controlled in the lake.

The oosterschelde also goes into Antwerp, big harbor, they all cross Vlissingen, a city in the south-west of Zeeland.

When I was younger we used to take the boat from Vlissingen (Flushing) to England (Dover). Remember some fun times from there, always a night over trip, my mom is english so we went to see our relatives for xmas.

Those boats stopped a long time ago, not sure anymore why.

Well, now little Alex is got the bug from Nathan, so it’s making its way around the house. So we’re holding it together here as best we can.

@confused newbie: you’re in orange county? or LA? where do you go to get good dim sum? we used to go to a place in santa ana but it no longer serves dim sum. to satisfy the craving, i sometimes go to the food court in mitsuwa market or this little place in irvine.

@thuff7: it’s partial salty, there is some fish but not a lot, most of the fishing goes on at sea or ooster-/westerschelde (east/west). I’ve heard stories that there were spottings of seals once or a few times, but never saw them myself. There are some in the north of holland, at those islands, but not really down here.

@Alexpham: plenty of nice places in europe to see, I really liked ireland myself, italy is good, greece, spain, sweden, iceland, holland ofcourse :P

The veerse meer is famous for watersports, big camping along the lake (several I am sure, but this one is close to where I live), almost all watersports folk that come there.
