walking away

hello!

i just got home from a week in little rock, AR and dallas with my family. arkansas is SO pretty!! i would die of happiness if there was that much green here. it was awesome. the humidity, however, i could do without.

i met a bunch of my aunt’s awesome ballet students. watching their class made me want to be a dancer.

the dallas show was sooo fun! it was great to have my sisters with me on stage again. 112 people showed up, all of which were super amazing people :) thanks so much for coming out!

this song– “walking away” was written by the same two women that wrote “ours to keep”– rachael lawrence and deborah ellen. they are both awesome and i had so much fun recording it with them. it’s available on itunes here:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=310937220&id=310937192&s=143441

oovret: Week 51

What is the most memorable gift you have given on Mother’s Day?
hmm. i think that question should be directed towards mama g. one that comes to mind is a plaque i made when i was little. it was a drawing of two honey bees holding up a scroll that read something like “#1 world’s best mommy award.”

Does your family have any Mother’s Day traditions?
yes! but we didn’t get to do it this year because we were in arkansas, and then my parents had to fly home and the sisters and i drove to dallas. :( but usually we make her breakfast in bed on mother’s day. fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee, huevos rancheros, bowl of mango and a hand-picked bouquet of flowers arranged by emi.

Why did you stop ballet dancing?
you know, i was wondering that same question this weekend… according to my grandmother (who is a ballet teacher), after seeing our first recital she told my mom to make us quit because she didn’t like what they were teaching. :( i’d love to have been a dancer though. not too late??

Do you enjoy listening to Johnny Cash?
someone i should spend more time listening to!

Speaking of Dallas, do you know who shot J.R.?

@rissa
welcome! and thank you so much :) my myspace is http://www.myspace.com/kinagrannis
@dro
you can lucid dream every night!??! ahhh jealousy. i hope you’re fulling taking advantage of that! if i were you i would perform at the hollywood bowl… and scuba in the middle of the ocean… and fly to the top of mt. Kilimanjaro … and become a squirrel.
@nico
that sounds amazing. id love to get to that point.
@mojojojo78
i only impersonated tracy morgan because he was standing behind me at the airport for a few minutes talking REALLY loudly (his phone conversation went as follows: “HELLO? WHO IS THIS!? WHO IS THIS!? THIS IS TRACY MORGAN! TRACY MORGAN! …oh. ok.”) so when i retold the story i HAD to talk like him, naturally….
@timR
the system is down. the system is down.
i just had so many homestar runner flashbacks…
@deana
wow, very moved by that story.
@hannah m
oh no! you’re JUST missing two shows. ucla on the 18th and santa monica on the 31! :(

To all those that love this song, you have no idea how good the version on iTunes sounds! I listened to it 10 times right after I bought it. Go get it now! Best $0.99 ever :)

That was lovely Kina. Glad you had fun recording it.
I can totally relate with the without humidity thing. I grew up in Indonesia where humidity is 24/7/365. Ending up in CA without humidity had me jumping up & down of happiness.
I do miss the green though. That’s life I guess, can’t have everything.

Hmmmm, I have to say, her honey bee plaque was pretty darn cute. I have it framed in my studio. It says “Congratulations! You won the Best Mommy in the World Contest!!”

The best way to reach her is to email her at kina@kinagrannis.com :)

And by the way, Kina did not discontinue ballet due to her grandmother’s edict. She and Misa started martial arts.

So you´ve been keeping this song a secret from us? ;-P

How many other hidden treasures do you have? Old songs we don´t know about? I really hope you go through your songs and see if there´s something the world would be ready for… I have a feeling there might be…

The Kina is GROOUUUNDED… We had that light-switch installed for you so that you could turn the lights ON and OFF…. NOT so you could throw light-switch raves!

Pretty song. I loved the harmonies. Thanks for the shoutout for my cousins, they’ll love it.

TimR said on...

May 14, 2009

Agreed. I just put it on a loop when I bought it and listened over and over again. Never gets old. I think I like the strings better than guitar, but Kina’s subtle vocal changes in this video made the vocals better than in the iTunes version.

TimR said on...

May 14, 2009

Loved this! The vocals sounded even more vulnerable than on the iTunes version. You have an amazing gift Miss Grannis!!

Now let’s go break open that glowstick and pour it into mama g’s mountain dew.

wwar1ace I could swear we already had this exchange in the bla(h)g comments before. Are we already out of material? It’s only been a year and a half!

deana said on...

May 14, 2009

agreed, timR! something about seeing the performance makes the itunes version sound better too :)
seriously, i can’t wait to buy that next album. after last week’s post, i started thinking a good name would be songs about dreams… but at least one of your dream songs have already appeared on previous albums (memory)

hi kina

I really love your song “together”. But I cannot find the notes. It’s such a pity.
May you send them to me? Or publish them?

Love your voice and your smile (I know, I’m not the first saying that :-))
But I hope you enjoy it anyway!

Have a sunny day,
yiannis

you know, i could lucid dream every night, but i choose not to. firstly, performing at the hollywood bowl, scuba diving in the middle of the ocean , and flying to the top of mt. Kilimanjaro are all things we can do in real life. secondly, i’m already a squirrel. heh.

oh maybe i didn’t wake up yet. either way, i like having random dreams sometimes. wanna trade?

i love “walking away” and “ours to keep,” but is there any way to get them without itunes?

aznbean said on...

May 18, 2009

well iTunes is usually the best way, because it gives credit back to the artists. However, if its your own personal use and you aren’t planning on doing anything else with it, i’m sure you could always make mp3s of them yourself. But 99 cents for a song by Kina is completely worth it in my opinion :)
