well first off, i just wanted to say that it’s been so cool for me to read through all of your answers in the last post for that little question-tagging game that went on. i vote for a giant joint birthday party for everyone!
secondly, thank you all so much for all of the street team suggestions! the are awesome! i’ve been slow to get started on all that this week because i have a friend in town from canada for 10 days and i never get to see her, BUT, i promise to get back to work once things are back to normal.
also, word on the street is that perhaps someday in the near future we may be approaching the day where there might possibly be a forum on the site. maybe.
today i hung out in manhattan beach! so pretty, but now i feel all sunned-out and salty and tired.
oh! correction– i know for a while there the 30th show was at room 5, but now it’s free and at usc’s ground zero!
i heart you all.
kina
@horehay, christa mae, gracie
welsome!
@james
nice meeting you and i hope you approve of the cover :)
@nottaclue2
thank you for your story!! that is incredibly cute.
@misa
call me back!
@eric
regina’s “samson” is just one of the most beautiful songs ever. i almost covered it one week, but i was afraid i might not do it justice so i just let it be.
@oovret
Why do you tie your guitar strap to the neck instead of using the strap peg?
- it seems to slide less for some reason, it always ends up at the wrong angle when i use the peg. plus i like my guitars pretty :)
What kind(gauge, etc) of guitar strings do you use?
- varies depending whether my guitar is standard or tuned down
How many rugby matches did you watch in NZ?
- one
How often do you surf?
- i’ve only surfed about 4 times ever :( fun though!
How many miles have you driven your car?
- oh my. a good many, though i don’t know off hand.
How long will your hair stay straight?
- it’s gone! it really only lasts until it gets washed.

Great post as usual!
I have questions:
is that a silver spider ring you wear with the red stone in the middle? Where did you get it? It looks Native American and very cool.
Have you ever been hang-gliding?
When are you going to post all the lyrics for your new songs on your website?
April 28th, 2008 at 1:59 am
i like the koa but for some reason i miss the 814ce.
*edit: if i wasnt nimur i would seriously think nimur/rumin was the same person right about now…
where is everyone? i though there would be at least 10 posts by now. we all cant be tired of telling kina how great she sounded…
April 28th, 2008 at 2:01 am
you should use oovret for your questions. it seems to be working…
April 28th, 2008 at 2:39 am
Yayyy!!!
And she did it without and accent! well this sounded just splendiferous. I didnt really see an issue with your Eyebrow. Perhaps it is 2 something in the morning and i may be a tad delirious. Also, Im glad you enjoyed Manhattan Beach, did you take those infamous pictures on that pier? man, what am i talking about?? im going to sleep.
Can’t wait for Forum, The 30th and May 24th!!
=)
p.s. - The color of your top is BOSS.

grrr, I gotta wait 3 more hours before I get home to see this video, I envy you guys. I’m sure it is great :)
April 28th, 2008 at 3:34 am
That video was clearly uploaded in higher quality than usual. BUT, for some viewers, that might not be the best. I have a decent connection (4 Mb/s) and it didn’t load in real-time. Worth it for me, but it did take a lot longer than usual to load. That said, HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMA G! Deja vu
April 28th, 2008 at 3:52 am

Thanks for the beautiful (as always) vocals to start my Monday off feeling pleasant. Looks like you were using a capo for that song. I never really noticed it before. How often do you use it? After I got a capo I was using it all the time. It tends to make my playing sound a little happier!
Keep putting your little jokes on the videos (check out my eyebrow) - they are funny!
DNoe
April 28th, 2008 at 7:13 am
she uses a capo on many of her songs
April 28th, 2008 at 7:34 am
Thanks Kina. :)
April 28th, 2008 at 8:34 am
great cover! when i first started listening i didn’t think it was possible to make this song your own but u KINAIZED it! reminds me of all those great apple commercials =)
April 28th, 2008 at 9:28 am
Great video Kina. Thanks for posting. You really should make sure you take some “Kina” time every now and then.
Kina, my birthday isn’t until October but feel free to send a “shout out” anytime.
Awesome. I wasn’t late. Happy Birthday Mama G!
Forum sounds good maybe chat also??
April 28th, 2008 at 9:42 am
you are so great. you have an amazing voice. every one of the posts have been audio gold for my ears to have. i have a request. i would love to hear your take on “don’t talk” by the beach boys, or maybe “caroline no”. i know that it’s sort of out of left field. i imagine you and your sisters would demolish it in a way that i cannot begin to comprehend.
anyway. hello.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:52 am
my ring is silver, but not a spider, but i wouldn’t put it past me to wear a spider ring. my grandfather made it back in the day.
haven’t been hang-gliding, but i’ve been sky diving twice!
new lyrics… that’s a good idea. in the meantime, they’re posted in the “details” section of their respective youtube vids
April 28th, 2008 at 9:53 am
i’ll bring the other one back soon :)
April 28th, 2008 at 9:54 am
you’re supposed to call me back too!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:55 am
haha, i use my capo for nearly everythng!
April 28th, 2008 at 10:23 am
The Macbook Air song! At least, that’s all I know it as.
Short post :( Not really in the grand scheme of things, but the last few weeks have rather spoiled us. I suppose things had to correct eventually.
Not much to say though. Good job, as usual. I enjoyed being able to get a good look at your left hand on this one
Post Script: No title?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:51 am
You owe me a pair of glasses.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Man I wish I lived in Socal so I could see more shows. I haven’t been to one yet :/
April 28th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Thanks! You are too cool for school lady. Wow…Travis’s video was amazing. Powerful stuff.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Well it could have been worse…
I could have written in pig latin. Backwards.
muwahahahaha.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:57 am
This is going to be a great week, I just know it. Is anyone going to the Wednesday show? We should all like totally wear like secret decoder-rings to like identify the Kinanites and stuff, yarmean (is that right? what’s the official term?)?
PS: Please excuse the Valley slang. I just finished watching a rerun of Sweet Valley High.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Kina,
You’re writer and clearly you also appreciate other musicians work. Is there a song that you like so much you wish you’d written it? on another note, what is your least favorite song?
April 28th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Simone, order here: http://www.kinagrannis.com/media.php pay via paypal.
April 28th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Kina, name this blog entry, cause probably a few weeks later we won’t be able to click this entry on the main page without a subject. :)
April 28th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
how’d you like forgetting sarah marshall, by the way?
April 28th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Hey Kina,
Your cover’s great as always. Real quick, I was wondering when Cambridge and your other new songs will be available on iTunes? Or is there a date yet when the album will be available? Thanks.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Kina, I think you are reminding me how much I used to appreciate lyrics back in the day… even when they are covers ;-)
The b-day thing, I always thought you took it as +/- a week from the day you are announcing (since you never put dates on them)… but the fact that you mention b-days is great in itself.
Did a quick check/vote on Travis’ video, it’s looks hard to generate a good video with only 5 minutes or so to build up characters and tie emotions to them. I guess music is also similar but in another vein of creativeness. Here is wishing luck to Travis for his upcoming selection process.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
@ Steph - Here is that top 5 thing. I have been way busy and havent been on here much i miss you! haha
1. - Walk On
2. - Genevieve
3. - Stars Falling Down
4. - Message From your Heart
5. - Falling Slowly
April 28th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Very cool cover as always Kina! I bet James will practically wet his pants when he finally hears you covering it, haha.
So you’ve only gone surfing 4 times? I LOVE to surf. I probably go at least once a week if I can. There’s a nice spot near tressles I love to hit up when I have time. You should go more often, its quite therapeutic if you ask me. You know, whenever you’re stressed out, or something.
Anyways, thanks for always taking time out to make a new video every week. I always love having something great to listen to and get stuck in my head to start off each new week =).
Everyone have a wonderful week!
April 28th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Best wishes from Berkeley and sunny San Francisco. I’ll be spreading the good K-word to the eastern shore when fly home to visit my folks early May.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
i totally forgot that today was blog day! i was driving back up to san fran from san jose earlier and the whole time i was imagining that you were covering New Soul. i come home and check the blog, and what a surprise. yes, it’s true, i am psychic. just don’t ask me to predict your next cover haha. btw kina, are you by any chance a Meg & Dia fan? it would be hella sic if you covered one of their songs. anyway, i’m rambling now.. so let me end this. peace.
jd.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
what was wrong with your eyebrow(s)?
April 28th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
“Well HERE’s your problem….. you got this thing set to EVIL.”
:-p
April 28th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
It was trying to do the same thing it does every night: Try to take over the world!
But honestly, nothing was wrong. Kina’s being self-conscious.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
so i’ve been lurking all day and only now mustered the energy to type.
woo! another beautiful cover, thanks kina!
omg…. i just looked at russ’ pictures from the show. SO JEALOUS! SO MAD! i cant believe i didnt see youuu!!!!!!! nooooo!!! and your hair was straight!! haha a little detail, but i still cant believe i missed it!! gahhh!!

April 28th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
+5 points for using a Simpsons reference. Actually, I think that episode reran just a few days ago, and I happened to watch it =)
April 28th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
YAY! i love manhattan beach, i used to live right near there in redondo, but then i moved. i hope you enjoyed the south bay :)
wonderful cover btw, amazing as always.
thanks so being so cool!
April 28th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

April 28th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Aw, I’m kinda sad, cuz you were saying you were going to come with your dad, so I was looking forward to meeting the both of you at the pub too =/. It’s always cool when you get to meet online peoples for the first time face to face.
Anyways, how’s the college tour thing going? find any schools you like yet?

yeah, it can take more time to load…
is it just me or does “&fmt=18″ load faster and quality is just as good as “&fmt=16″?
and i agree, it sure is worth the wait.

Kina seemed a little less personable today…..a bit distant & less humble? I hope it’s my silly imagination, because I adore her.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:42 am
Haha seriously!
!flah a dna etunim a tuoba ,gnol oot toN
and to comment #30, I would venture to say that it is indeed your imagination, :) She’s a rare ‘un that Kina, she is.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:48 am
Gotta love it…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PQhNt0vYPY
I especially like the last 10 seconds of the song. It’s my guilty secret. And no, I don’t like Babysitter’s Club. But I do like the Boxcar Children.
*Skeletor accent* Bwhaha-HAH!
or maybe you’re just bizarro-rumin…who knows???
the Shadow knows….muwhahahaha.
now if we could only find him.

They’re Winky and The Wayne
Yes, Winky and The Wayne
Their twilight campaign
Is easy to explain.
To prove their browsy worth
They’ll overthrow the Earth
They’re hinky
They’re Winky and The Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, Wayne
Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, Wayne
Narf!
I prefer to think of them as Winky and Wayne. The right one’s more of a Wayne in my opinion.
April 29th, 2008 at 2:14 am

April 29th, 2008 at 4:00 am
It might just be me, but in bizarro land, “&fmt=81″ is pretty great quality.
me am happy.
April 29th, 2008 at 9:58 am
i wish there was a date i could give you! i promise as soon as i know, so will everyone else
April 29th, 2008 at 10:03 am
oh dear me, i hope i never come off that way! if anything i was trying to be brief so that my friend that’s staying with me didn’t start feeling neglected! sorry :(
April 29th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Interesting. What makes you say that?
I think the video was just shorter, less frills (particularly on the birthdays), and no bloopers, which…I’d like a 20 minute video every week, but I can understand how she might not always want/be able to do that. Though the third thing that keeps me coming back here, besides the beautiful music and charming(ly silly) videos, is that it’s intriguing seeing the effects of increased/increasing fame.
Though, speaking of silly, it’s a bit goofy to post as if she won’t read this. Hi Kina. I much like Chloe, rather adore you (I was going to say “find you adorable”, but y’know, shades of meaning). Keep doing what you’re doing, except maybe for the performing-only-on-the west-coast part, and I evermore shall hold down the adoring geriatric demographic of your fan base
April 29th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
no need to apologize, kina
Chloe would understand that you don’t want your friends to feel neglected..
April 29th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
i was going to go to that tervoo thingie but anyways my question is.. whats your fav fruit and vegetable?
April 29th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
i did! but you didn’t pick up…
April 29th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
I can see how one might think Kina was being a little more distant this week (only because the video was shorter) but we need to understand that, at times, she will be busy. If you keep this in mind, you will remember to treasure the times we do have with her, and not to worry about those that we don’t.
I understand where Chloe is coming from, but Kina is absolutely amazing!
April 29th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
my favorite fruits are plums and kiwis.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
like washing the car, doing the dishes, walking the dog, etc. you’d be very surprised at the things you can do with a capo =P.
April 29th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
i just dont get the “less humble” thing… that was pretty random…
kina is far from lacking humility or not being humble, at least considering how close she keeps in touch with her fans when she doesnt have to at all..
i dunno… to each his own! haha “to each his own’ when did i ever use that phrase lol
April 29th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
boo radley! to kill a mockingbird!! i love that book!! haha sry… just found it amusing!
i can never decide on my favorite fruit. it might be watermelon. but it has to be the really red, juicy, sweet watermelon!! mmm!
April 29th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Haha it’s a good book.
I’m actually rumin, but I got tired of using the same name.
ooh! ooh!! what about pomegranates?
April 29th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
@russ
yeah i was just checking out your site one day. i’m really really into photography, so nice job! i dont have the money for a digital slr [as of now] so i’m mostly working in film. its awesome developing and printing my own stuff tho!… and then sometimes i borrow my schools slr! but yeah… nice job!
@timmy
i was really looking forward to meeting all the other kin[addicts] [or whatever we're called] at the show!! what happened was that i had to meet my host at uci at 12:30 so didnt have time! :( but i loved califronia and the schools so i really hope i’ll end up in CA somewhere! so maybe i’ll meet you all one day :]
anyway. i’ll let the entire bla[h]g community know what i decide when i do decide!…even though half of the people here prob. dont care haha
April 29th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Very cool Steph! I started out with film back in high school, before digital started becoming a usable media, and I LOVED developing my own photos. It’s a whole lot more rewarding in my opinion knowing you involved yourself in every aspect of developing a photo, from taking it to processing it in the dark room. =).
And now my passion’s turned into my profession, so here’s to hoping you keep pursuing yours =D.
I’ll be waiting to hear what school you end up choosing!
April 29th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
mmm, pomegranates. They’re yummy, but I wish it wasn’t such a hassle to get to the little juicy seeds inside. That, and if you get a stain on your clothes, its practically impossible to get out =/. But they’re still yummy =).
April 29th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
KINA…
pleeeeeeeeeeeease cover “love in this club” by usher acoustic.
omg that would be game over…
i can basically guarantee you this will be this summer’s “bleeding love”
if you saw the bleeding love video (the UK version) it was POSTED on October 2007. freakin october, but is blowing up only now or recently.. lol
love in this club is so so so so gonna take over this summer guaranteed…
hahaha
anyways, this one girl covered it acoustic and i said to myself “the only one who could cover it better is kina” haha when i watched it
http://youtube.com/watch?v=CQu4Ls_XvAs
this girl is amazing… found this cover randomly lol
PLEASE COVER IT BEFORE BOYCE AVENUE does hahahaha. they cover songs before the artists release them hahaha. thats why they are so popular lol
April 29th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
oh haha… ok well welcome back under a new name :]
promegranates are good… but so hard to eat!
April 29th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
i didnt know you did photography too!! but know i do… esp after the like.. hour that i just spent going through your flickr hahaha. anyway, yeah i looove film. even better then when i do use an SLR it just feels alot more natural to me but yes i will def. have to step it up to digital sometime soon haha. i’ve always wanted to go further into photography, who knows! maybe i will!
April 29th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
@ emceemiko - Have you heard “Love in this club” part II? with Beyonce and Lil Wayne???
take a listen to that.
=)
April 29th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
But it’s rather…low in moral fiber, doncha think? It’s sketchier than any other song she’s covered, anyway, though it does sound pretty.
April 29th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Nice, Russ. Thanks for sharing the photos!
April 29th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Kina, I love that song! …and as usual I think I enjoy it more now. I have a lot of songs I’d like to hear covered by you but must admit I like being surprised. I’d never expect you to cover most of the songs I’ve heard here. And, of course, it builds the anticipation for your next original. Really hope to make it to one of your live shows on my next socal visit.
April 29th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
my eyes hurt
April 29th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
good people live in Georgia….. : )
April 29th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
haha…. silly Timmy…
April 29th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
I vote for this as the next vlog song.
April 29th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
so cool. my sisters birthday happens to be today and her name is jasmine. so i was able to send her this link as if the famous kina grannis were giving her a bday shout-out even if the jasmine may have been someone else. lol. anyways, i hope you all have a good morning, afternoon, or evening wherever you may be. i have to concurr with steph too! a really red, juicy, sweet, and seedless watermelon is wheres its at. right out of the fridge even better.
April 29th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
Just out of curiosity, what are you considering “geriatric”?
April 29th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
That’s a might personal, don’t you think?
April 29th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Yeah, we don’t want a Miley Cyrus type debacle happening to Kina.
April 30th, 2008 at 12:14 am
Hey Kina, hopefully I get home from work in time to head up to SC for the show tonight! Is “Ground Zero” at the student union? Being a UC alumn I’ve avoided trojan territory w/o a good reason for being there. :)
Love the Yael Naim cover!
April 30th, 2008 at 1:13 am
sorry…
too bad it’s not really backwards, then all you’d need is a mirror!
April 30th, 2008 at 1:16 am
older than dick clark? i think that trumps everything.
April 30th, 2008 at 1:28 am
totally random (and pointless) question, but it’s something that’s bugged me for a while. was it absolutely necessary for tom cruise to be sweaty in every, single, scene of top gun? the man’s face is literally dripping every time he shows up on the scene. i feel like i need a shower just watching this.
that said, i vote kina do a cover one day with aviator sunglasses. they’re cool.
April 30th, 2008 at 6:45 am
I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of Kaki King, but if you’re ever looking for cover ideas, she’s got some great music out there. 2 O’Clock is an especially beautiful song in my opinion and I can only imagine how great it’d sound as an acoustic version with you singing it.
April 30th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Older than the trees, younger than the mountains
April 30th, 2008 at 10:26 am
no, I’m serious….. how old?
April 30th, 2008 at 10:30 am
that’s true… i would never want kina to compromise her morals or her moral fibers… ever
but that song is so good haha.
usher is officially back… watch out justin timberlake!!
April 30th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Ground Zero is NOT in the student union. It’s on the edge of campus, just inside the corner of Exposition and Figueroa. Go in Gate 3 on Figueroa and park in the Figueroa Street parking structure. GZ is a short walk away (towards Exposition) on Childs Way. Just ask and someone will direct you. Don”t worry….we don’t eat bruins/bears/other UC entities……much! See you there!
April 30th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
As a statistician/Kinerd with way too much time on his hands, I had the urge to summarize the Top 5 lists that everyone made last time (and the one entry in this blog posting). The rules were, that if you had two songs as a single entry I gave a half point to each song. Otherwise I gave a full point. And since steph had two separate lists, each song of here got a half a point (only fair since she had 10 songs). And no weighting was done, since Miko’s game called for a set list, not a list of your 5 favorites in order from best to 5th best.
So, here are the top 10 songs mentioned (countdown style, ’cause that’s how I roll):
10 (tie). Genevieve / Blindly (3.5 mentions each)
9. Heart & Mind (4.5)
8. Walk On (5)
7. Together (6)
6. Memory (7)
5. Stay Just a Little (7.5)
4 (tie). Strong Enough / Down and Gone (8 each)
2. Cambridge (8.5)
and #1….
Message from Your Heart (9.5 mentions)
And yes, I know that’s 11 songs, but a tie at #10 necessitated that. I think the amazing thing is that people mentioned 37 distinct songs! Granted a few of them aren’t yours Kina, but most are, so you have a lot to be proud of!
For anyone who wants to see the full list, I have it published on Google Docs here:

@Kina
I have a song request for you, which may not seem to fit in your repertoire… it’s a song I think that you could really make your own (and not just cover)… in the way Kate DeAraugo remade “Heaven” (by Bryan Adams) from a power ballad into her own style.
–”Give to Live” by Sammy Hagar/Van Halen, specifially the version from their Live album (Right Here-Right Now).
Beautiful song, great message, and the guitar on the live version seems more intricate. I think your voice, and your own style with these lyrics, could really blow us away. Expecially since it’s something a lot of people probably haven’t heard in a long while.
BUT…. assuming you’re not a closet Van Halen addict, you were probably singing more about humming birds and Teeny Bear than listening to Van Halen at the ripe age of 7… I’ll bring a disc to give you at the show tonight, so you can listen and decide for yourself.

(Side-W00T!…… 100th-comment… I HAVE to celebrate it, cuz I don’t think I’ll ever be online early enough to get 1st-comment when she posts)

I’m reluctant to say. For very silly reasons, I freely concede, but nonetheless

but only if she’s covering “highway to the danger zone”.

oh man, kaki king is an unbelievable guitar player! She helped write a lot of the soundtrack for “August Rush” (another great movie in my opinion), and I got to see her a while back playing with the Foo Fighters. She’s definitely up there on my list of inspiring musicians.

-Deciding rather or not to gush like a crazed, foaming at the mouth groupie-I LOVVV YOUR MUSIC!!!!! Ok that was low key but if you keep being the angel you are going to have yet another disciple.
You know I don’t cry to songs that easy but I came to find myself crying like a newborn to your music. The love of my life flew off with my heart unknowingly in his back pocket and I lost him to two women, one of them being Lady Liberty…and I’m still friends with him even though I’m nothing more then a disembodied voice in his life … Anyway anyone can relate to love found or love lost whatever the case may be etc but in a number of your songs seem like instant scenes channeling my past, the struggle with my heart in the present, and the long road to recovery…not to mention while watching your videos you remind me a lot of him it hurts, and freakin weird!!!!!! However your voice and lyrics break through and still give strokes of comfort and support…thank you.
