building a mystery

“building a mystery”- sarah mclachlan cover

last week in the studio with john fields was so fun! this very awesome drummer, pete thomas, came in and added some very cool percussion. i’ll keep you posted on what’s next. i hope there is a next…. arg. silly music industry and it’s lack of speed.

if you haven’t taken this poll on the forum yet, go take it now! we’re so eager to know where you all came from :) (and which social media site i should feel more indebted to ;)
http://www.kinagrannis.com/forum/topic.php?id=21

oovret’s questions of the week:
BUT FIRST! an aside— i know that originally “oovret” comes from “tervoo” backwards, meaning in theory the ‘t’ in oovret should be pronounced, but for some reason i am so inclined to say it “oovray”, like the french pronunciation of “et”. am i the only one? ok, to the questions…

How long does it take to dry your hair?
hours. most likely because i don’t help it out at all….
Do you use any hair styling products?
yes, there really is no method to my madness, i have tons of things that i’ve accumulated over time, hair sprays, leave in conditioners, mousse, gels, sometimes i’ll use one, sometimes i’ll use 3, i don’t really know what i’m doing :)
How often do you cut your nails?
fairly often, they annoy me if they get long at all—makes playing guitar difficult.
What brand of toothpaste do you use?
crest1
Approximately how long does it take you to “get ready” in the morning?
depends on the day. if it’s a normal day, probably 7 minutes. if its a show day, maybe 20? give or take 15 minutes of switching in and out of outfits i disapprove of… haha.

hey! remember my friend kalu james from the “realize” cover video? he’s releasing his cd this week! yayy kalu! congrats :)

@dOris
thank you for sharing your song! it sounds like it’s very beautiful.
@kiyoG
oh my gosh! those sushi flash drives are the coolest thing ever! that is so funny…haha
@megan
thank you so much for the message! it’s always fun to have a new person in the blog :) anyway, that’s so awesome that you’ve been around since the digg days! thank you so much for the support and i am so so happy that you are enjoying my music :) come back to the blog whenever!
@steph
oof… “kina’s favorite face”… we’ll have to save that for another day. :)
@jeffreyy !
WHAT?! crazy cool digital microscope! i gotta find me some bugs.

    yay you get a cookie.

  3. blew Says:

haha, I finally found out what makes these videos so cool, the randomness of them that always makes me laugh. Never listened to this song before, and it was great. The whole cutting of the fruit thing scared me I though the knife was going to slip and cut Kina, the shoutouts and birthdays inside surprised me. Anyways great video again and I can’t wait until next monday for a new original.

Mmm…cookies sound good can I have one with chocolate chips Kina??? jk

Also, did you forget to answer the last two oovret questions? Or is there something wrong with my computer and it doesn’t show the answers?

Edit: I want to guess the answers, I guess crest for your toothpaste in a spearmint flavor and then 45min-1 hour for you to “get ready”.

  4. kina Says:

haha. oops! ill go do that now.

  5. TimR Says:

    @Kina
Any idea when you’re going to let us in on what song you recorded in the studio? It’s all very suspenseful…

  6. arch Says:

    yay cds!

  7. LiamTyler Says:

    I love it!
Every video you post gives me more inspiration towards my music, and i thank you for that.

Question, any chance of you coming down to georgia any time soon?

  8. Timmy Says:

I was slightly afraid when I saw the song title you were gonna sing, cuz if i’m not mistaken, Sarah drops a little f-bomb somewhere in the song =X. Glad we avoided that one.

I won’t be able to make your Century City shows, but I’ve already made sure to catch your K-Scope show when it rolls around.

  9. Yohan Says:

    Well-played, Miss Grannis.

    I say “oovray” too!

    Congrats on the new home!

    *limbs crossed* for studio time

  10. K.Gábor Says:

Hello Kina! I like your songs and you too, you are very imaginative in the videos. I would like play the gitar like you :) - and the previous video is the best whit teaching. Ömm. I saw your videos on the youtube and i will vote. I’m from Hungary. Do you know this country? And if you can’t say out my name- öör, like (in boy)Gabriel, or I don’t know. I’m sorry to bother you :) , but i can’t sleep without this letter. And sorry for the English mistakes. 0:47.am.-I’m crazy :) Bye Kina…

  11. J.C. Says:

    Mmm Korean pears…

Toothpaste? Wow some weird questions people ask…lol

  12. Jen Says:

YAY you recorded your first single!!!!!! how exciting!!!

and YAY you are gonna do one of your new songs next week!!!! to bad I will be in kentucky and won’t be home till tuesday so I wont get to watch till tuesday night :(..

The Birthday/Shout out Fruit thing was really cool….made me laugh when you took a bite and that face you made.

That was a lot of CDs and Shirt packages you had there… I wanna get a shirt, I just can not make up my mind in which one I want to get.

YAY to you finding an apartment!!!

I don’t know why I am using YAY so much…hmm.

    have a good week Kina.

    Jen :)

  13. thomas_in_taipei Says:

Argh! I just wish my cd and shirt were in that box. But no…… Paypal hates me. I’ll figure it out; eventually.

Part of this is a little hard to hear after you finish singing, but otherwise great job!

    Does paper taste very good?

  14. code2mind Says:

Oooh.. great video!! love the pear trick! :)

  15. deana Says:

kina, that was impressive. this song really brings me back! just made me think, it took years for me to collect as many favorite sarah songs as i have of yours. she’s never left my playlist either.

your shout-outs equally impressive :-) for a second, i couldn’t look because that’s not the safest way to slice a pear [mom instinct kicks in].

  16. dro or ryan Says:

building a mystery! so appropriate for when you’re in the studio, in many ways. esp when you have more than one artist working on your song. I’m excited to hear the new stuff! = )

New apt! that rocks. I’ve seen that wall behind you before, so that’s not it, right? Btw, that wall, actually, that room is amazing. so colorful and inspiring… i’m going to paint my room now… but how…..

i’ll be careful next time i have a pear, and see if there are names magically written in it.

    have a great weeeeek!

  17. StephH Says:

LOL I’m gonna be biased and say today’s fruit shout out method was by far one of your best and most creative. It definitely gives the reverse writing one a run for its money! AND of course, AMAZING job on the Sarah McLachlan cover!

    -Stephanie

  18. Tanya Says:

loved the video and the song. def brings back some old memories, but in a good way!
and yay for a new apartment in LA! i loved how you switched rooms in he video with a click of a button, oh technology these days ;)

by the way, thank you SO MUCH for the birthday shout out a couple weeks ago while i was on my trip! i somehow had internet connection when i was in israel but there was no sound! so when i saw my name i smiled :)

so im SUPER DUPER EXCITED X 100000000000000000000000000000 (thats a lot of excitement) to come to your show on the 5th at Kaleidoscope! when i saw that on your myspace i seriously freaked out cuz its like a 12 minute drive from my house (damn streetlights and not that my sister and i timed it or anything….)

cant wait for an original song on next week’s vid! have a great week! :D

    Tanya <3

  19. Senator133 Says:

Great post Kina. Work has had me busy lately. Bad news is I don’t visit the site as often as I’d like but the good news is I still listen to you during the day on my mp3 player. Have a great week and thanks for the enjoyable music!

  20. shir Says:

that was a huge asian pear! ahh cali fruits, so jealous. congrats on the apt, im moving too. . . such a pain but i get to play with the bubble wrap :) question - have you studied any languages other than japanese? i guess your pronunciation of ‘oovret’ got me curious

  21. Jeffreyy ! Says:

why’s it soo hot !! ahh ! stayy cool kina & gang ! btw, i lalalovee these blogss :D, time to find some bugs !

  22. steph Says:

yay!!! i love blogs!! haha don’t worry, i’ll just eagerly wait for the day when i see your famous face.

mmmm now i really want some asian pear!! haha and i agree with jen, nice face! and at first i thought you actually wrote on the pear and was sad that you wasted a pear, but no. good job kina!!

congrats on finding an apt! although i enjoy the interesting backgrounds of the grannis household. and i like the switching of rooms, just ’cause you can.

i can’t wait for the single!! ahh i want to know what song it is!

i’m so jealous of anyone and everyone that gets to go to kina’s shows!!!

i’m super excited for the brand new song next week!

…and i’m done with my random thoughts. kina is awesome. the end.

  23. Awake Says:

Kina, I notice that you write “Anyway”, but say “Anyways”. Is that a style for effect thing? Like “She don’t love me”.

I’m annoyed tonight because I am traveling and cannot watch your new posting. When I travel and use my laptop (PC), I often (but not always) run into a problem at YouTube where all of your videos are not available. All I get is a message that says, “We’re sorry. This video is no longer available.” Meanwhile, I can watch lots of other videos. I never seem to have this problem with my Mac desktop at home. Have you heard this complaint before? Am I the only one?

I guess I will watch you posting on Friday when I get home.

  24. slightly disgruntled Says:

Damn you Kina, as excited as I was to see Sarah McLachlan as your cover for this week, I am deeply disappointed that you censored her beautiful lyrics. And while I understand your decision to do this, I am against the censorship of art. Somewhere, I hope that one day, we get to see another side of you, and all the sides of you that make you you, expletives included. Though really, it was just one word, and I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it was about damn time for a Sarah McLachlan cover. As always, I am looking forward to next week.

  25. Tricia Says:

Lovely, as always. Just thought you should know you pretty much inspired me to finally pick up the guitar and learn to play. I started lessons in April after I saw your Missy Higgins cover. I can now play several of her songs and because of last week’s teaching session I can also play “Strong Enough” (it’s a little rough around the edges, but I’m working on it). I’ve given a couple mini-concerts to my family and friends and it feels amazing!! When I get up the nerve someday after I can play better maybe I’ll post one. Anyway, I look forward to your post every Monday and continue to be inspired. Did you forget to have a featured video this week? xoxoxo…

  26. Nikki Says:

You were awesome at the relay for life! Capo Alumni team next year for sure, im making it! Yay for running. And like always… loved your blog.

    I heart you. :)

  27. Steve K Says:

HA you totally fooled me with that pear… thought you were going to take a big bite out of it

  28. Glenn Says:

Beautiful rendition Kina, that asian pear looked pretty good too until you took a bite… I guess paper does not add the right flavoring… or was it the ink ;-)

Congrats on your new place, something came to mind when you mentioned that. Do you recall the locations where you write your music or come up with a song? You will be christening your new apartment with a new creation soon I am sure.

  29. extremely gruntled Says:

Thank you Kina for editing that little word out. It definitely establishes you as a family-friendly artist with strong moral fiber who doesn’t stoop to vulgar language like that. I’m sure all the parents with little kids who look up to you and listen to your music appreciate that as well.

    From an admiring parent.

  30. Jeffreyy ! Says:

gooodmorning kina ! this blog is now officially bookmarked as the first on my safari; meaning although, itl’ll be another week til’ another one comes up, it’ll be kinda like my mp3 player except, youtube style, haha. its lovelyy. anyways, have an awesome weeeeeeeeeeeeeeek hope to see ya on the 27th! Ciao, :]

  31. Misa Says:

    @awake –

Anyway and Anyways are both acceptable uses of the figure of speech, so it’s probably something like the two pronunciations of either and neither. Sure, they’re spelled the same, but I pronounce it differently based on my mood and I never notice when I do. Even more similar is Toward/Towards–either is acceptable, so it could be that one could get used to writing it one way and saying it the other without even paying attention! :)

  32. Jamie Says:

hey kina! http://www.youtube.com/v/LWmRb1MzbPU&hl did you see the song aj rafeal and his friends dedicated to you? its really good in my opinion and well if you didnt see it theres the link! XD

  33. JaY_Yu_eL Says:

hey kina! another awesome video! i’m just wondering when can i see a new video of you and your sisters again?

  34. asdf Says:

    Awake:
Reload the page when it says it’s no longer avaliable and press play again. It will work…

btw youtube problem here too :( Cut to other room, then the video stops, but my browser still downloading it’s data. And I can’t skip that part with the seekbar. :(( It shows a still frame, downloading the video, but not playing it. I’ll try tomorrow again.

  35. Aeglos Says:

Nice enough song. I really don’t understand the lyrics, don’t begin to understand the lyrics, wonder if there’s realistic understandability in the lyrics, which doesn’t so much appeal to me. As for the edit: very interesting. I back it, I prefer it, but it definitely makes me wonder more about you. I mean, why not? It reflects that whole foundation thing again, but what is it? But I don’t expect an answer. I’m musing :)

So…yeah, nice post. Neat pear trick. It is always fun to see what you with that each week. See you next week then…

Oh, and I miss your family. Bring them back. You’re pretty cool by yourself, but the Grannis family is greater than the sum of its parts.

  36. coffee Says:

i think you should eat more things with paper in it because you make the funniest facial expressions when you do =]

  37. wwar1ace Says:

@Aeglos — I dunno, just musing on your musings… but to me, I don’t think she’s editing it to conform to anyone’s expectations. I think she does it just because those particular lyrics don’t fit her personality, let alone her public persona. Online and in person, I’ve never heard her even slip into the realm of PG-13 when excited. Some people are just like that.

But I’m no mind reader… @Kina? @FamGrannis? Any one care to comment this issue?

    -wwar1ace

  38. Awake Says:

    asdf,
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I have tried reloading and just tried it again. Still does not work. Perhaps it is my laptop. I am getting a new one next week, may be it will work with that one.

    Misa,
Thanks for the clarification, although I am not sure I completely agree. With a quick Google search, I found several blogs on the discussion of Anyway vs. Anyways, so I guess we don’t need to start another one here. Here is an interested article about this topic: http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=20001030

Since Kina says “Anyways”, I assume that you and Emi say “Anyways” as well? Anyway(s), I think you are all smart, talented, and gorgeous regardless of whether you say “tomayto” or “tomahto” : )

  39. TimR Says:

Anytime there’s a conflict like this, I like to settle it using googlefight. Anyway wins by a mile!

Of course, I prefer anyhoo, just to really throw people off.

  40. JoePike Says:

Yo Kina Babe, great cover. Sarah M.’s voice is almost as good as yours, and you sounded great on that song. She has SO many other great tunes…would love to hear you do another cover of hers somewhere down the road.

Of course, artists like Sarah M. will be covering your songs at some point over the next decade… :o)

I’m really looking forward to hearing your new song next week!

  41. Jeffreyy ! Says:

Joepikes right; one day soon, artists’ will do doing covers of your amazing songs :] !

  42. Menno Says:

    Kina kina kina!
Yesterday I went to a concert of Miyavi, a japanese rock artist.
Please don’t tell me now you dont know him.

Btw last week… that first letter was dutch? We have someone representing zhe netherlands! \o/

  43. music_lover Says:

3 words,I Love It! xP ,i have this cd,and this is my favorite song!!,so..THANK YOU! For This!! xD

  44. oovret Says:

    Mon Amour,
    Pour vous, je suis oovret.

  45. Aeglos Says:

    Well played

  46. Menno Says:

Bonjour Ooovret, et bienvenue dans ceci forum

Did I write that correct? I had 4 years French lessons and after all I didnt remember a thing of it.

  47. emi Says:

in writing i always say ‘anyway’, and usually while speaking too, but i’m sure every once in a while an ‘anyways’ slips out in conversation :)

  48. Awake Says:

That’s cute Emi. I guess we don’t hear you speak often enough to verify that : ) - which is too bad. I love the clips of the sisters interacting with each other, and sometimes laughing out of control. It makes me feel a little guilty about not getting a sister for my daughter.

English being my second language, I am certainly in no position to be judgmental about the correct usage of words. I just remember that in one of Kina’s YouTube video, the word “Anywayz” was spelled out on the screen. So I assumed the pronunciation was quite intentional to achieve a certain effect and not accidental.

TimR. Thanks for playing referee. Now let’s go to another subject.

  49. Misa Says:

And when I said “accepted” I meant as part of colloquial speech. Actual, official english has been so butchered by accepted colloquialisms that purists probably spent entire days crying in the corner of their room, like when they add words like “tuneage” and “bling” to the Oxford English Dictionary.

Now, when Strunk & White start adding “anyways” to their list of acceptable uses, THEN the world will surely come to an end. :)

  64. Daniel J Says:

Hey Kina! You know the video for Heart And Mindwhere u were eating strawberries? That gave me an idea for a song! (lol @ using a strawberry for emphasis) I find all ur videos really inspirational, and I wish U gd luck with the new album.
    I hav 2 questions
Will U include any songs from ur youtube channel on the new album, and if so which ones?
What label were U signed to for ur first 3 albums?

    @ Kina

Would the drummer mentioned in the video to ‘building a mystery’ be the same Pete Thomas from The Imposters, The Attractions, as in Elvis Costello and The Attractions:-

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjckE5WkrNI

After fetching all of these, it would be seriously funny if it was not, but seriously cool if it is him though!

If time is a problem Kina, videos 5/6/7 are probably the ones to head for for eyeball confirmation, but not necessarily for the music - Fiona Apple is the guest singer in them.
