lalala

first– before your hopes get up– emi and misa are not in this video. misa had a lot of plans while she’s in town so we didn’t have time to do it for today’s post, however, we will definitely shoot a song together before misa goes!

The Goldfish Song- Kina Grannis Original

**my shoutouts were cutoff :( sadness! i’ll post them to the next video!**

you might remember this song from some video way back when– i played the first verse or so for you at the end of the video, but now it’s done! hooray!

my marathon is this sunday. AH! i’m so excited but pretty nervous too. knowing me i won’t be able to fall asleep on saturday night… and knowing bodies, that’s probably not going to do much good for the run… but it’s ok! that’s what adrenaline is for, right? if me and my marathon cross your mind this sunday, send me some positive vibes :)

oovret: Week 24

On which talk show would you most like to perform?
hmmm… any talk show would be cool, really. conan o’brien would be cool, but he’d probably jokingly make fun of me and i’d probably cry. haha. the ellen degeneres show would be cool, too. or… any show.
What do you think about while running? everything and nothing. sometimes (when i’m lucky) i’ll totally zone out, which is nice, most of the time i think about things i need to do later that day, emails i’ve received from people, people from my past, people from my present, things i want to do, how i am going to survive this crazy industry… ooh! a pretty tree!… AH! i almost tripped on that root!…. i want to be that person’s friend… etc…
If you could have a real-life pokemon which would you choose?
the only one whose name i know is pokemon. i guess that leaves me no choice…
What is your favorite beverage?
iced soy chai (oregon brand chai, to be specific)
Have you ever used a firearm?
nope.

@BeeKool
welcome! and yeah, dexter rocks :) i FINALLY started this season… crazy!
@katiebean
nice cousin story! reminds me of my childhood.
@windscale
a fellow runner! hello! hopefully you can make a show when you’re training in san jose…. otherwise… i better get out to the UK already.
@ken
thanks for the reminder. perhaps i should book a next show…
@wwar1ace
ok… i think i see the word “happy” on a palm frond (an aside– i don’t know if i’ve ever looked at the word “frond” before… it’s weird) and i think i see “kina” in the grass. from that i can deduce that perhaps i should be looking for the word “birthday” or “bday”… but no luck yet…
@mama g
the song i sang for the man at the santa monica pier in exchange for a rose was a new one called “word in front of me”
@kim h
i heart you too! thank you so so much. good luck with guitar! you can do it :)
@meeks
yayyyy im so glad you liked the cover :) i quite enjoy checking for your weekly facebook picture update!
@elina
i read your comment too late, i’ll give Princess Masilungan a shout out next week! promise.
@nick from argentina
haha… thanks for making sense of my sleeping problem… you’re a smart one!

    This song is awesome, the new album will be one of the best albums of the year. I can’t wait until then. AS for the pokemon question, I am pretty sure there isn’t a pokemon named “pokemon” haha. Anyways awesome song again, and good luck with your marathon. Now it’s back to George Lopez until CSI:Miami comes on.

  2. Keara Says:

    That was gorgeous. You are fantastic! If I could steal your voice, I would!

  3. Code2mind Says:

    very lovely.. lol.. on the pokemon.. i havent seen any tv shows in years.. as for the video.. love the song.. no shoutouts/birthdays?

  4. Glenn Says:

    I was just thinking about this unfinished song earlier when I discovered I could play all your covers in sequence from YouTube.

    Good Luck with your run this Sunday, I have seen the course and it looks long (heh, I couldn’t think of anything to say about it) but it definitely takes you around the sites of San Fran. I know you will do great :-)

    Yay, on the album progress front!

  5. kina Says:

    two things:
    1. my shout outs and bday wishes were lost somehow! i’ll attach them to the next video!
    2. re: pokemon…. *sigh*… je suis stupide.

  6. Paid for in Dollar Coins Says:

    Hurray for being completely clueless! ^.^ I’ll have to ask Amanda which video had the verse in it. Pretty though.

    Much luck on your marathon, Kina ^.^

  7. Yohan Says:

    Yay for November and finishing the song. I love what you did with it!

    Good luck on Sunday! Wish I could be there for support.

  8. arch Says:

    i love the editing =]

    and the painting! it looks just like the original. who did it?

  9. Meadow Says:

    That’s a great song, can’t wait for the album to come out. I love the painting of the Grannis Girls (this should be a show by the way). Good Luck with the Marathon.

  10. 10  J.C. Says:

    :) Awesome song as usual. Good luck w/ the marathon! I usually can’t sleep before a tournament either…If you can’t sleep, try to think of random things not related to the marathon. We all know you’ll do great!

    Is that Emi’s artwork on top of the piano?

  11. 11  Gene Parmesan Says:

    I was in Ground Zero today and that reminded me that the blahg was today…I really like the new tune!

    Good luck with the marathon, you’ll do great. (I mean, I barely was able to finish that 5K in Zilker Park, so anything beyond that would impress me)

  12. 12  gu3ssit Says:

    ahh good luck with ur marathon!! Don’t you love the cold weather?!??! i think its awesome.. haha

  13. 13  BeeKool Says:

    goodness.. what instruments to you NOT play?.. i’ve got this piano in the corner of my living room (my mom’s) and a guitar in my room that’s about 2 weeks old (a gift), but i’m afraid of them. I wish I knew where to start in getting to be “musical”. I probably have to start by learning how to read music, right? When did you start on your musical journey?(maybe I should read up on that on one of your webbies.. huh?)

  14. 14  meeks Says:

    kina! your marathon is this sunday!! i am so so so proud of you!!! you loving woman, loving daughter!!! =)

    i will send all the positive vibes i can!! i hope that i can run a marathon next year! if i train for it kina, can u run the CHICAGO ONE with me? haha or just run the CHICAGO one because it’s beautiful anyway… =)

    i can’t wait for ur album… it would make a wonderful Christmas gift. is it coming out before Christmas? =)

  15. 15  Mama G Says:

    Too bad this back-up band can’t accompany you on your tour… I like them :)

    @Arch/J.C. The painting on the piano was done by Emi’s very talented friend, Nick Lombardo. I love the expressions on their faces.

    Hey Meeks! Have you received your year’s supply of Tide? :)

  16. 16  Mama G Says:

    :) :) and more :)

  17. 17  Katiebean Says:

    Wonderful as always.

    So this doesn’t have much to do with the video other than the fact that it’s about a goldfish, but for whatever reason I feel like telling this story.

    In junior year of high school I took A.P. Environmental Science, and we had to make these “ecocolumns” which were basically a few two liter bottles connected together with several sections on the inside. Basically the top layers were things you might find in a compost pile, then below those layers, there was a layer of soil that we planted grass in, and below that (at the very bottom) there was a goldfish. I think the theory was when you poured water over the entire thing, the nutrients from the composty part would feed the grass, and then the fish below it.

    Well, our group had some trouble keeping our fish alive. I think we went through two fish in the first week alone.

    Around this time, my friend Kelsey had volunteered at a mariachi festival and saved some of the prize goldfish from going to the big fishbowl in the sky at the end of the day (when they were going to throw them out). She graciously let us have one for our project (we named him Gustav). She kept the rest.

    Gustav (rest his soul) died shortly after when we had to leave him for the weekend in the classroom.

    Later, our ecocolumn sprung a leak and was declared a biohazard by our teacher (I think it was because of all the little fish bodies at the bottom), and we were asked to dismantle it.

    The funny thing is, all of my Kelsey’s fish died also, except one. Mr. Fishy.

    When my friend got these goldfish, she figured it wouldn’t be a big commitment, goldfish don’t live that long after all. So a few months later when Mr. Fishy was still around, she began to neglect Mr. Fishy in hopes that it would ultimately bring about his demise. She stopped feeding him, stopped cleaning his bowl, but alas, Mr. Fishy refused to die.

    In the end, I’m not sure anyone could determine the cause of death, though I personally think it was old age. All we know is that Mr. Fishy will be remembered and remain in our hearts forever.

    *Closes imaginary storybook*

    And that my friends, is the story of Mr. Fishy, the invincible goldfish.

    BTW I love that painting!

  18. 18  Katiebean Says:

    Oh, and good luck with the marathon!

    I vote next weeks blog should be on tuesday, to give poor Kina a day to recuperate.

  19. 19  wwar1ace Says:

    Ahhh… I LOVED the Goldfish song. But alas, it’ll have to wait till tomorrow at work. Dial-up just ain’t gonna cut it for song-listenin’. :-P

    @Kina… pretty good. One more hint, how old are you now?

    @Keara: Don’t you dare.

    @Mr. Parmesan: GZ?… Are you on campus often? You work there too?

    Catch y’all tomorrow…

    -wwar1ace

    Edit: Just listened… wonderful song. Right up there as a favorite.

  20. 20  elevated thought Says:

  21. 21  mojojojo78 Says:

    Kina, Kina! great video, once again. seems you’re getting more and more creative each week. the accompaniment inserts were great! i love when mondays come around and we get to see what fun, quirky ideas have escaped from your brain, onto film since the previous week.

    for anyone wondering, i believe the verse was first sung at the end of the Bleeding Love video…i think. lol

    good luck next sunday!

    can i have that painting on the piano?…or a replica? lol

  22. 22  dro or ryan Says:

    yooooo kina

    amazing as always. has me real excited for the new album. why do i feel like i’ve heard this before? maybe i’m crazy. (edit: duh, just read your blog.)

    anyway, poor shoutouts!! but hey, if it’s not toooo much trouble, and if u have a little room next week, can u give my boy Suitkace (yeah, we call him Suitkace) a bday shoutout? Truly appreciate it =)

    And good luck with the marathon!! It’s finally here!! woohooO!!

  23. 23  Schryver Says:

    You’ve never played Pokemon!?!?!! You seriously must. It is so addicting and I know you would adore some of the cuter Pokemon:) The song was great…and there was some piano! Recording new album in November!…sweeeetness! Good luck on the run. You’re gonna do great. Already can’t wait for next weeks post.

  24. 24  Tiarenar Says:

    that was ur best song yet, better than the classics “Message From Your Hear” and “Gotta Digg” lol i do remember wen u played it at the end of an older video
    that song reli spoke 2 me, the lyrics reli worked. ive jus started college and im reli being forced to wonder over my life and what is mine and what isnt and taking responsibility. the only consolation in my life rite now is music, and u r particularly inspiring 2 me
    its actually becuz of u that i write so much more songs. i used 2 write once every few days but now i write about 4 or 3 each day! ive jus written one called “Looks At Me”. here it is (im too good at chord names, i play ear)

    B flat B7sus (in 1st fret)
    The door closes with a cheeky smile
    B flat B7sus (in 1st fret) B7sus (in 3rd fret)
    Too much of a good thing leads to tears
    B flat B7 sus (in 1st fret)
    Since when did being shy go out of style?
    B flat B7sus (in 1st fret) B7sus (in 3rd fret)
    Me and my guitar don’t need you here

    Cm7 Cm7 (in 5th fret)
    So we’ll play you out the door
    N.C.
    Don’t look through us anymore

    B flat Fsus
    I tell you they looks at me
    (repeat times 4)

    same chords for next verse

    Tuning the strings fast, might they break soon?
    I’m drinking way too fast for time
    Could the artists please stop drawing this cartoon
    All eyes on me are mine

    lol just wrote it, and i was writing it the strings on my guitar broke for the very first time. she’s called suzie.

    does ur guitar have name too?

    cant wait for next week!
    Tiarenar

  25. 25  Tiarenar Says:

    lol sorry, i meant NOT too good at tab names

  26. 26  FinnFan Says:

    I agree with everyone. Great song, and can´t wait to listen to your album, and enjoy your marathon! I´ll do my best to send my best positive vibes to you… although, in my case, that might mean staying up all night :(

    You´re amazing: planning for your album and running a marathon… In my eyes, either one is an wonderful thing to accomplish, and you´re doing them both, practically at the same time. Can´t be more than a handful of people, in the whole world ever, who have managed that!

  27. 27  gedrocks Says:

    kina! nice song! as always i loved it!.. good luck on the marathon.. and I agree with katiebean why not post your vid next tuesday so that you have time to rest.. =D

  28. 28  Geoffrey aka Zedleouf Says:

    This one is great, congratulations Kina, you’re really amazing!

    Truely fan…

    Geoffrey,

  29. 29  emmayun Says:

    so happy you finally got this up. I loved hearing it in the bleeding love video, and now it’s finished! This made my day. Good luck on sunday.

  30. 30  Windscale Says:

    Even despite the high standard of last weeks blahg this song doesn’t disappoint. I’ll look forward to hearing a studio version. I was just thinking how much the technology has moved on from the Tascam four-track tape recorder we had at school let alone the idea of video!

    Good luck for Sunday. It looks like you picked a really good race - it should be fun. Hopefully it’ll be cool weather and a big loud crowd to cheer you on. You’ve done the training so you’ll do fine I’m sure. In my experience I think its pretty normal not to get much sleep before a big race and I don’t think it really makes a difference. “Taper madness” is really wierd though. Fortunately just a 10 mile race for me on the same day!

    Don’t feel bad about the Pokemon - I don’t remember the names of any either and I can only think of the small cute yellow one but I only saw the cartoon occasionally and never played the games.

    Since you’re signed to Interscope you could always try and blag a celebrity entry to the London Marathon in April (then you get to start at the front on one of the starts as well :-).

  31. 31  Kim H Says:

    amazing amazing amazing amazing!
    hahah when I heard you playing the first few notes… I thought “hold on, why does this sound so familiar?” Then at the end of the video I read your little blurb about how you had posted the beginning in one of your older videos. So once I read that my brain did a little jig because it would have driven me nuts if you hadn’t told me :)

    And on the marathon, SUPER POSTIVE VIBES!
    You’ll be fine, and probably so full of adrenaline not a whole lot will matter :) I can never sleep before a big event. I can never fall asleep for more than half an hour at a time, so I try to think of boring, sleep inducing things, or really relaxing things. Like hammocks! (yeah strange, but something about them make me really sleepy hehe)
    Or I do small meditation type things. Well I just consciously relax myself, and focus on breathing etc, until I can fall into a light sleep.
    But then again, my brain jumps to 20 different things a minute, so that’s a bit hard to do BUT that’s a whole other story!

    okay this has gone on long enough. I’m just trying to avoid work :)
    fantastic video, have a great marathon! I’ll be cheering you on in my head on Sunday!

  32. 32  megan Says:

    hey! uh, yes, yes, I love you, I watch your videos all the time, etc… but strange question. what’s that font on your home page where it says “kina grannis”? thanks :-)

  33. 33  TimR Says:

    Yay on the album news! Any other hints on what’s going to make the album? In any event, good luck on that and the marathon!

    Soooooo…surprising no one’s mentioned this yet, given the strong Apple-Kina crossover, but what does anyone think of the new Macbooks?

  34. 34  J.C. Says:

    @Mama G: Cool artwork by Nick Lombardo. Is it airbrush?

  35. 35  shir Says:

    hey kina - very cool painting. . . have a super fun run and remember to rest well 2 nights before the race (REM cycle). ps - what’s with the blanket? isn’t it warm in CA?

  36. 36  maryanne Says:

    Loverly as usual! I love the feeling in this song as well as the geetar. Aww haha don’t worry about the pokemon thingy. Good luck on Sunday, run your own pace!! Take care!

  37. 37  Cassie:) Says:

    most excellent. This song has been on repeat all day.

    my friend is running a marathon this sunday too up in SF. It couldn’t possibly be the same marathon, could it? You may have mentioned what marathon it was at one point, and I could have totally missed it.

    that said. thank you for yet another lovely song. good luck on sunday, take care, and looking forward to hearing about it.

  38. 38  Misa Says:

    @megan–I think it was Love Letter Typewriter. It’s that or one other font and the exact answer escapes me at the moment…maybe something with “degenerate” or something in the title.

  39. 39  sabafa Says:

    SO COOL!

    Larger ones can be got that could be held in place with a band - you may have seen someone wearing one for filming a gnarly trail ride that they wanted to post to You Tube perhaps:? but they won’t be as useful in writing an sos/call 911 note imbetween drink stages if you find that you’re too dry/out of breath to talk or too into the ‘lost in the rhythm thang’ like a zombie to even collapse for assistance - ‘& hopefully next time I see you, I’m not dead!’ - lol, probably will be euphoric throughout, talking/singing to us lot pretty much all the way and turning the 26miles into a couple of hundred by zigzagging with a bucket to collect even more donations;)))

    As always, no matter what transpires, BEST WISHES 2U, putting up more vids! d:JK:P

  40. 40  coffee Says:

    you have no idea how much i love this song. good luck this weekend in the marathon!

    @TimR

    I’m not too sure the new macbooks are exactly an ‘upgrade’ of what the previous models had to offer. I do like the newer external design, but spec wise it’s really not that different then the previous model. I certainly hope the new nvidia 9400m doesn’t have the same heating problems as the previous generation of 8xxx series of chips. I’m also not liking the new trackpad, but hey that’s me.

  41. 41  TimR Says:

    @coffee: I have a feeling what they’re calling the Macbook White is going to be a huge seller, being the only Macbook (non-pro) with Firewire (and the $999 tag doesn’t hurt either). But I was a bit puzzled by all the specs too. I guess I’m ultimately waiting for some sort of Mac netbook - but hey, Macworld 2009 is only a few months away!

  42. 42  el Says:

    :) Hi Kina. I’m new to blogging and a new fan of yours. I think your Goldfish Song is really good. Wondering why you chose not to write a third verse? Oh, and what brand guitar do you have? I’ve been looking for one and can’t decide. Thank you :)

  43. 43  deana Says:

    great new song. it’s so nice to finally hear it finished :-)

    so, i’m conflicted… i also can’t wait for next week’s update but seriously think you deserve a day off after running a marathon. i’ll be thinking good thoughts for you this weekend.

    @everyone, never too late to help kina get to her goal!
    http://pages.teamintraining.org/los/nikesf08/kgrannis

  44. 44  Hannah Says:

    :) i suppose the next album i’ll buy will be off the website. i’m also looking into the possibility of a shirt. i’m a fan of shirts and a fan of supporting stuff that i like.

    your marathon is coming up so soon… what time are you aiming for? or are you just aiming to finish? if i HUGELY extrapolate my horrendous 5k time, i could estimate i’d finish a marathon in about 5 hours and 40 minutes. haha. that is, of course, ignoring the fact that i’d have to crawl the last 20 miles. do you have any long runs left before sunday? and what about after the marathon, do you think you’ll keep running or train for another race?

    i quite like the new song :)
    one thing i don’t like is how youtube has, all of a sudden, started putting ads EVERYWHERE.

  45. 45  Aeglos Says:

    I really like parts of this song. Like really really. 60% of this song (lyrically, as written in the youtube info) would definitely make my Kina top five. When I first heard it I thought the same thing. But the “this matter is mine” part, I dunno, it just brings up unpleasant associations of small uncooperative children or perhaps friends who wouldn’t let others love/help them, wouldn’t open up, and in that sense, it turns me off.

    Ah well. You’re still awesome, Ms. Grannis. And I’m leaving for my dear alma mater’s homecoming in 30 minutes, which is also awesome

    Oh, on a more humorous lyrical note (that wasn’t the humorous part), when I first heard this son, because of the way the lines and words fit together, I assumed there was a place called “Mishakta castle” with which I was unfamiliar.

  46. 46  ajsea Says:

    I’ve been unacceptably absent lately. I make no excuses; life has ben incredibly busy and many things took, for a time, a backseat, but it’s time for that change. At least in Kina’s case. I miss her too much.

    The Gold Fish Song is really cool. Good Ms. Grannis.

    Excited to be back,

    Alan

    Love the new song. Can’t wait for the new album. I think it’s really cool that you’ve been training for the marathon. I’m actually from San Francisco but I won’t be around for it cause I’ll be in Davis for school purposes. Good luck to you, you rock!

  49. 49  Jkupo Says:

    Loved the new song! I was glad that you put up another original. I never got a chance to ask you at your last show, but can I have a birthday shout out next week (my bday is on Oct. 19th)? I didn’t know where to put the request T_T…

    I’m a huge fan of your music. Mondays are made much more bearable listening to your music. (And thankfully since I have your stuff on my ipod, so is tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, etc…)

  50. 50  asdf Says:

    I really really loved this song in it’s unfinished state. The finished version? Hmmm, hearing for the first time i was like heeeey what happened whith the end of the song? I liked it :’((
    But know i like this version too. A LOT :) And it will be on the album, yaaaay ;)

  51. 51  Maureen Says:

    At first I thought you were saying, “The spider is mine…” Haha. It’s this matter is mine, right? You get really into this one. Love it.

  52. 52  Misa Says:

    welcome back ajsea :)

  53. 53  Tricia Says:

    Does anyone have the tabs for this song? Very beautiful. I think it’s her best one yet!
