finally in the studio!
hello everyone!!
today was my first day in the studio to record my new album! i can’t believe after months and months of waiting it’s actually happening :) i’ll be in the studio monday through saturday during the month of november. i’m recording with producer rich jacques and i am very excited. today we had some fun with “stars falling down”. it’s pretty crazy… haha.
speaking of the album– i really really really would love your opinions. nowadays a standard album is 10-13 songs… which is not nearly enough. :( some of my songs, unfortunately, will not make the cut. so my question for all of you– what are the top 5 songs YOU would like on the album (not counting songs that are on any of my previous 3 cds)??
would it help if i listed some songs? here are some– but not all– of the possibilities, just to get your brain working. if you have a favorite that i didn’t list, please don’t hesitate to put it on your top 5! sometimes i forget about songs….

a word of warning– since during the month of november i will be in the studio mon-sat from early until late oclock, and sundays will be spent training for the marathon, sleeping, and catching up on other normal life obligations (grocery shopping, saying hello to my parents, cleaning…) you might notice that i become a little more scatter-brained, a little less creative in the blogs, and a little less responsive to emails, comments, etc. it is not because i don’t care!! once the album is done i should become a little more human again. i promise to keep you all looped in on things and show you clips from time to time.

Very tough (no, impossible) to narrow it down to 5, but here goes:

5. Stay Just a Little/Heart and Mind - one of these two, but only if you can get both sisters in on it; otherwise I’d hold off until the next album.
I really love Strong Enough, but since it’s been available for the longest time as an MP3 I’d hate for it to take the place of another song. Same for My Time with You.

Hmm. We live in a new media age! It’s time to throw off the shackles of that mid 80s CD technology… (CDs appeared on Tomorrow’s World in 1981 - I still have a recollection of them putting the jam on the disk and playing it afterwards. Sadly I couldn’t find the clip on YouTube.)
I vote Kina should be the first artist to release on a new format. I guess either DVD, Blu-Ray or my personal favorite - 32GB iPod Touch :-D. That way you can release all you YouTube videos, production videos and super high quality digital tunes all on one convenient package (oh a you get a cool music/video player chucked in as well.)
It might take 15 years before you can release your next iPod but hey, thems the breaks.

Hey Kina,
I know sometimes you have to scale things back to make a project manageable but if you decided that you wanted to do all of the song I think you can. You would just need to have an average song length of 4:14 (you can go a bit longer if your using an 80min CD but studios usually use a 72min because they tend to be more reliable).
However if you still need/want to scale back, I say make a list (your already done with this step) and then start working on songs as you want to, which ever one feels natural to work on. If you end up getting through all of them then sit back in some comfy pillows, listen and organize. You’ll end up throwing a few out because you cant work them into the flow or end up not liking the direction they went in.
I suppose I haven’t done what you’ve asked at all, but I hope this helps.

If all of these songs are not on the record, then I will burn Utica to the ground. But, with that in mind, this is your record! Put the songs YOU want on there. And God help those who would put a song on their record in place of another song that they would’ve rather had instead to please the fans. Sure, we, as your fans, are fucking and belligerently awesome, and completely probably deserving, but, I could not knowingly sleep at night knowing that you would do such a kind thing. If I knew. played a live set and, the whole time, played obscure originals and covers no one ever of heard and not once played -his or her- hits and popular songs. The crowd loved it and carried that person on their shoulders out of the venue and sprayed confetti and champagne. Well actually, that person was booed to death and got shit thrown at them. “PLAY [song name], YOU FUCKING HIPPIE!” What is the moral of this story? You should always hire security. So, put the songs, YOU want on the record, at risk of
alienating some fans -or- put the songs the fans want on, at risk of destroying your soul, -or-…
Put all of them on. Who says a record has to have a certain number of songs? I’ll tell you who. Music exec fascists. That’s who. Know what’d be cool also? A DVD OF ALL OF YOUR YOUTUBE POSTS. AND FOOTAGE OF LIVE SETS. AND ORIGAMI. AND BUTTONS. I’ll tell ya, we’d be more than willing to pay extra for more songs, and all of the aforementioned items. JCPenny coupons would be nice too. We better see a music video soon. And there had better be a massive tour. I’ll see you on Conan, missy. And then, the world. And it will be great.
If not, you’ll still have us, right? That’s - that’s still kind of cool, right? We - we supply enough love, don’t we? And plus, you’ll only have to do about 3-4 thousand more weekly videos for the rest of your life. Wow life’s short.
Someone should work on getting a kinagrannis.com poster in the background on the Today Show. Let’s make it happen people. Street Team, assemble! You get your posters ready. Put em in the car. And then hunt down those camera crews and also bring them to sporting events. Bumper stickers! Banners! Host release parties when the record comes out! Vandalize property with KG marks! Sure, people won’t know what it stands for but I really don’t see how that’s relevant.

Hey Kina,
First time I’ve come here to comment, but we’ve met a couple of times in San Francisco. In my opinion, if you are conflicted about which songs to put on your album, I believe these 5 would be my choice:
1. Cambridge
2. Delicate
3. Heart & Mind (with Sisters harmony)
4. Stay Just a Little (with Sisters harmony)
5. Protect Her (this would be a great final track)
and the Goldfish Song would make a nice “hidden track”
I do hope the producer and the record company lets you bring in your sisters for some harmony parts in this CD. From talking with your dad, and from seeing you sing together online and in SF, I know they deserve to sing with you.

hmm… guess not, but if I could, I would change the “hidden track” to be “The Sukiyaki Song” which, while being a cover, would work much better as a hidden track, in my opinion. I don’t think many americans would have heard that song before. I know I hadn’t before hearing you cover of it.

If your recording logi$tic$ workout record all of them choose the ones that turned out best(your choice), include some bonus tracks(hidden/whatever)
Of course any of the 17 can be given arrangements that just make them that much more beautiful than their you tube siblings. I know you or someone wiser has already thought this for me already, just want to contribute my 2 cents for you.

i guess i would say you should pick the songs that turn out the best. that said, i hope these will turn out great:

delicate
to add to Mauricio’s 2 cents: on that double album… it would be cool to have an acoustic set, nice and simple like your youtube videos. and the other a rock your socks off set. and of course you could do 2 versions of some songs (no matter, make it go, strong enough).

definetly include Cambridge and Heart And Mind, the latter of those has reduced me 2 tears many times and Cambridge is dangeroulsy addictive
also plz plz do the goldfish song, its so amazing
tbh, id want every song uve not put on an album yet 2 b on it cuz ur that amazing, but it depends if u wanna sell a lot, cuz double albums cost more so they wudnt sell so much. U could release as little as 6 songs like the first album, but a good number i think wud b 10 songs
oh yh and Gotta Digg and Message From Your Heart! i know Message From Your Heart was released on iTunes, but i cant get it for some reason, maybe cuz its only available in US. I love those songs so much, they changed my life

I wanted to reply to this earlier. however i havent had time and now i do!! =)
i read that you wanted suggestions on songs on ur new album that will be released but not including songs that were on your previous 3 albums!
i say that you should include the best of the best songs on this new released album… ideally, u’d want everyone who buys your music to buy all 4 albums. but if someone were to randomly pick up your cd and that’s the first contact they have with your music, if you have slammin tracks on your first three albums, i wouldn’t rule those out as possibilities.
i say my favorite songs would be
WALK ON (haha, u know that already)
TOGETHER (makes me teary when i heard it live in LA when we first met)
STRONG ENOUGH
PEOPLE
MESSAGE FROM YOUR HEART
GIVE ME BACK
many many other artists who first released an “independent” albuim before they went big “recycled” some of the awesome songs from their independent albums. i dunno. just a thought. if all out production and press are going into it, i say put the best songs from the past 3 albums in addition to a bunch of many new ones u’ll put out!

I tend to agree with you. The majority of the songs should be new ones, but using let’s say the best three or four songs from the earlier CDs would be great. A total of 12 to 15 songs? (How many songs fit on a CD anyway?)
I have to bow out of listing my top 5. My top 5 is actually all of her songs.

I think you should put Disturbia on your new album. Disturbia will be your most requested video in a few weeks. They should actually redo your video with profession equipment, that would be awesome. Strong Enough and People should also be on the album. It’s sure good news to hear that you are finally in the studio. I can’t wait to see how well your new album does. Good luck with everything.

I actually think that 10-13 songs is the perfect album length haha.
A few years ago I started noticing this trend of albums being 20+ songs, and a lot of the time I felt like there was a lot of filler material.
I’d MUCH rather have a shorter album with really carefully selected songs!

It might be every bit as wonderful as ‘untitled’ from ‘in memory of the singing bridge’!
Way too many fans seem to be stating less is more for me to not state something obvious:-
if it’s on the CD and not liked by the listener, it can be skipped - someone else is likely to love having it to hear/use in a project that may bring in further revenues for Kina through having been included to be heard in the first place!
So, if Kina wants to share and can manage to do so for us, then that’s cool by me and if she doesn’t want to/cant, then it’s us that miss out the most!

Hey Keen- questions for you when you have time at some point in the future…
Will this be an independent release or will Interscope be releasing/promoting it?
Is the new disc going to be just you and your geetar or will you have any backing musicians?
Either way I can’t wait. But it’s got to be all new material - nothing previously released on the other 3 albums since you have too much great new material!
Don’t be afraid to put a ton of songs on it either. 15 songs on a CD is quite common these days.
